Background / History

Jiang Shang was a disciple of Yuanshi Tianzun of Jade Void Palace on Kunlun Mountain. After leaving Chaoge, he settled beside Western Qi's Wei River, where he fished with a straight hook under the Daoist title Flying Bear. His presence was interpreted as the fulfillment of Ji Chang's dream of a “Flying Bear” bringing a worthy minister. 17 18

When Ji Chang personally sought his service, Jiang Shang agreed to become Western Qi's Chancellor only if Ji Chang pulled his carriage himself. Ji Chang accepted despite his ministers' objections and pulled the carriage for eight hundred paces. Jiang Shang declared that this foretold Ji Chang's posthumous title as King Wen and an eight-hundred-year Great Zhou Dynasty. 17 18

Following his appointment, Jiang Shang held Western Qi's military and political authority. He interpreted a phoenix's descent on Qi Mountain as an omen of Western Qi's coming prosperity. 20

Jiang Shang led the ministers at Qi Mountain when Ji Chang formally founded Great Zhou. After the ceremony, Ji Chang named him Prime Minister of Great Zhou. Jiang Shang advised against an immediate war with Great Shang, instead recommending that Zhou contact other feudal lords, recruit troops, forge weapons, and prepare for a later campaign. 26

Yuanshi Tianzun sent Antarctic Immortal to support Jiang Shang with cultivation resources, pills, and divine weapons for Great Zhou's generals. Daoist Randeng later arrived to supervise the campaign and address any Quasi-Sage-level intervention. Jiang Shang subsequently gathered Great Zhou's generals so their strength could be raised before the attack on Sishui Pass. 28 29

During Ji Chang's secret conference with the feudal lords, Jiang Shang asked Randeng to use the Elucidation Sect's Mind-Control Technique on the assembled lords to prevent defections. He later drafted Ji Chang's proclamation listing Di Xin's four alleged crimes and calling for punitive action against Shang. 38 39

Following a ten-year period of seclusion for the Great Zhou generals, Jiang Shang took command of the Great Zhou army to officially launch the campaign against Great Shang. 54 55 He later proposed a three-pronged attack strategy on the Shang passes, coordinating with senior Elucidation Sect immortals. 62 64

Appearance

Jiang Shang is depicted as an elderly Daoist with white hair and a white beard, often seen fishing beside the Wei River. 17

  • Used a straight fishing hook while awaiting Ji Chang's arrival. 17

Personality

Jiang Shang is patient and calculating. He remained at the Wei River until Ji Chang personally came for him, then used the carriage-pulling condition to test the ruler's humility and resolve. 17 18

As Great Zhou's chief minister, he favors preparation over reckless action. He repeatedly opposed attacking Sishui Pass before Zhou had sufficient military and cultivation strength. 26 28 29

He is also willing to use coercive measures to secure Zhou's campaign, proposing that Randeng control the feudal lords rather than risk wavering loyalties. 38
