Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Planet Vegeta combat hierarchy 1 Adult Saiyans were classified by battle power: below 3,000 low-class; 3,000–6,000 mid-class; 6,000–9,000 high-class; above 9,000 top-tier warriors.
Newborn potential ranking 2 Newborn readings determined expected status: below 30 low-class, 30–60 mid-class, 60–90 high-class, and 90–120 elite material. A reading above 120 was extraordinarily rare.
Divine Martial Battle Art era 21 Three years after settling Divine Martial Battle Star, the average Saiyan exceeded 30,000 battle power; elites surpassed 50,000; the strongest warriors all exceeded 100,000.
Million-level elite era 27 After five further years of extreme training, battle, gravity cultivation, and recovery, the leading Saiyan warriors exceeded 1 million battle power.
Pre–Super Saiyan threshold 41 Bardock reached 3.37 million, Xuesaiya and Xuesaili 3.26 million, and Palanti 3.02 million; all were considered close to awakening as Super Saiyans.
Multiple Super Saiyan awakenings 64 The Namekian Grand Elder unlocked dormant potential in Palanti, Xuesaiya, and Xuesaili, allowing all three to transform into Super Saiyans; Bardock’s power was also greatly enhanced.
Race-wide bloodline resonance 67 During Barros’s disrupted bloodline awakening, every Saiyan on Divine Martial Battle Star transformed into a Super Saiyan through resonance.

Background and History

Ancient era

Ancient Saiyans recognized three primary bloodlines rather than numerical battle-power rankings: ordinary Saiyans, Super Saiyans, and Berserker Saiyans. Legends described Super Saiyans as warriors capable of shattering stars, though most of this history had faded by the Planet Vegeta era. A golden-haired Super Saiyan was said to have appeared roughly two thousand years earlier. 1

At their historical height, Saiyans were regarded as the universe’s foremost warrior race. They competed with the Namekians—whose Super Namekians were similarly formidable—as one of the universe’s two dominant peoples. Both races later declined following an ancient catastrophe. 61 62

Planet Vegeta era

Saiyans seized Planet Vegeta after exterminating its native Tuffles decades earlier. The planet’s tenfold Earth gravity, advanced technology, and battle-power detector system supported a society in which strength determined rank, resources, and survival. 1

Under King Vegeta, Saiyans were increasingly drafted into Frieza’s expeditions. Persistent casualties reduced their population and made strong offspring strategically valuable. 2 Frieza’s fear of the Super Saiyan legend ultimately drove his assault on the race. 12 13

Barros defeated Frieza’s initial forces and led willing Saiyans away from Planet Vegeta before King Cold’s forces destroyed the planet. Four interstellar arks carried the survivors to a new world. 17 18 19

Divine Martial Empire

The refugees conquered Planet C9965, renamed it Divine Martial Battle Star, and rebuilt it with Planet Vegeta–style cities, factories, spacecraft, scouters, and combat equipment. The Saiyans unanimously elevated Barros as their ruler; he rejected the title of king and became the Divine Martial Emperor. 21

Barros created the Divine Martial Battle Art by adapting internal cultivation methods to Saiyan physiology. The technique enabled Saiyans to absorb ambient energy, temper their bodies, and develop far beyond the limits of Planet Vegeta’s former battle-power system. 21 23

Under the empire, Saiyan forces expanded into surrounding star systems and later across the East Galaxy. Military merit was rewarded with resources such as Senzu Beans and Neural Tree Fruits, intensifying the race’s pursuit of strength and Super Saiyan transformation. 21 40 49

Appearance

Pure-blooded Saiyans are born with tails, a trait associated with their Great Ape transformation. 30

  • Tail — A defining physical trait of pure-blooded Saiyans. 30 52
  • Great Ape form — Exposure to a full moon can trigger a giant ape transformation. 23
  • Ordinary Super Saiyan traits — Golden hair, emerald-green eyes, and a blazing golden aura. 56
  • Barros’s unique formBarros’s Super Saiyan form has golden hair, blood-red eyebrows, and jade-green eyes; it is explicitly distinct from ordinary and Legendary Super Saiyan forms. 44

Society and Culture

Combat hierarchy

Planet Vegeta society measured an individual’s worth through battle power. Stronger Saiyans received greater resources, better opportunities, and more favorable assignments. 1

  • Low-class Saiyans — Below 3,000 battle power; generally treated as expendable cannon fodder. 1
  • Mid-class Saiyans — 3,000–6,000 battle power; capable of independently holding frontier worlds. 1
  • High-class Saiyans — 6,000–9,000 battle power; armored elite warriors and the backbone of King Vegeta’s guard. 1
  • Top-tier warriors — Above 9,000 battle power; fewer than twenty existed on Planet Vegeta. 1
  • Newborn evaluation — An infant’s potential score shaped future mission difficulty and expected status. 2

Values and customs

Saiyans are intensely battle-oriented and regard strength as the ultimate authority. On Planet Vegeta, addressing a superior warrior without an honorific could be fatal, while powerful women such as Xuesaili were addressed as “Lady.” 4

Children of deceased Saiyan parents were granted a mandatory three-year growth period before being assigned missions, preserving valuable bloodlines during an era of heavy wartime losses. 2

Divine Martial Battle Star retained the race’s martial values but replaced the old static hierarchy with systematic cultivation, gravity training, recovery-based advancement, and military rewards. 19 21 26

Abilities and Traits

Ki manipulation and combat aptitude

Saiyans cultivate ki as the basis of flight, energy attacks, combat power, and transformation. Their battle strength is commonly quantified through scouters and detectors. 1 60

  • Saiyan combat power can grow rapidly through battle and dedicated cultivation. 21 27
  • The Divine Martial Battle Art allows practitioners to absorb ambient energy and temper both body and ki. 21 23
  • Gravity training is a major means of strengthening the body; Barros’s evacuation arks included chambers capable of up to 500 times gravity. 19

Great Ape transformation

Saiyans can transform into Great Apes under a full moon, multiplying their battle power tenfold. 19 23

  • The transformation is tied to their tails and lunar exposure. 23 30
  • A moon-bearing planet is considered strategically advantageous for Saiyan forces. 23
  • Great Ape power varies with the individual’s base strength; Goku’s transformed power was only 60 when encountered by Barros’s group. 23

Near-death growth

Saiyans possess a “potential explosion window”: recovering after grave injury and near-death exhaustion can produce dramatic increases in battle power. 26

  • Senzu Beans allow Saiyans to repeatedly survive extreme training and exploit this recovery-based growth. 26
  • Barros used gravity training, combat, and Senzu Bean recovery to rapidly build elite Saiyan forces. 26
  • This method contributed to the rise of million-level Saiyan warriors on Divine Martial Battle Star. 27

Super Saiyan transformation

The Super Saiyan form is a bloodline awakening historically treated as myth on Planet Vegeta. Under Barros, it became a concrete goal for Divine Martial Battle Star’s warriors. 44 48

  • Barros identifies three paths to awakening: reaching sufficient battle power and breaking one’s limits, extreme rage, or being born with the necessary bloodline. 57
  • Barros states that a standard Super Saiyan transformation requires breaking one’s shackles with power at approximately the ten-million level; rage can force an incomplete early awakening. 51
  • An ordinary Super Saiyan provides a fiftyfold battle-power increase. 44
  • Barros declared that even low-class Saiyans could become Super Saiyans if they endured battle, training, and reached the required level. 48

Berserker and Legendary Super Saiyans

Berserker Saiyans are an ancient bloodline distinct from ordinary Super Saiyans. Broly was born with this nature, possessing overwhelming power but severe difficulty controlling his mind. 1 41

  • Broly can maintain an ordinary Super Saiyan form with his consciousness intact after training. 48
  • His Legendary Super Saiyan form can multiply his power by one hundred and carries a far greater risk of losing control. 44 46
  • Barros distinguishes Legendary Super Saiyans from ordinary Super Saiyans; not every Saiyan can attain the Legendary form. 50

Equipment and Infrastructure

  • Scouters and battle-power detectors — Used to measure life energy numerically and determine a Saiyan’s combat standing. 1 60
  • Saiyan battle armor — Standard combat equipment produced on Divine Martial Battle Star. 21
  • Heavy blades — Used by high-class Saiyan warriors under the Planet Vegeta hierarchy. 1
  • Spherical spacecraft and interstellar arks — Essential for missions, migration, colonization, and galaxy-scale warfare. 19 21
  • Healing pods — Used for recovery after combat and intensive training. 17 19
  • Gravity chambers — Central to Divine Martial training; the evacuation fleet carried standard rooms and high-pressure core chambers. 19

Relationships

  • Tuffles — Planet Vegeta’s former native inhabitants; exterminated by Saiyans before the novel’s main events. 1
  • Frieza Force and King Cold’s forces — Long-standing oppressors who drafted Saiyans into expeditions and later attempted to exterminate the race. 2 13 19
  • Barros — Divine Martial Emperor who saved a large portion of the race, led its evacuation, founded Divine Martial Battle Star, and introduced its cultivation system. 19 21 48
  • Namekians — Ancient rivals and fellow peak race; the two peoples once stood as the universe’s twin powers. 61 62
  • Divine Martial Empire — The Saiyans’ rebuilt interstellar state, whose military expansion and cultivation culture are centered on Barros’s authority. 21 49

Notable Members

  • Barros — Saiyan Divine Martial Emperor; founder of Divine Martial Battle Star and wielder of an unprecedented Super Saiyan form. 21 44
  • Broly — Natural Berserker Saiyan and Legendary Super Saiyan; trained by Barros to retain control over his power. 1 48
  • Bardock — Former low-class Saiyan who became one of Divine Martial Battle Star’s strongest warriors and awakened as a Super Saiyan through rage. 22 50 51
  • XuesaiyaBarros’s mother; a leading Saiyan warrior who later became a Super Saiyan after her potential was unlocked. 2 64
  • Xuesaili — Xuesaiya’s sister, Palanti’s mother, and one of the strongest female Saiyans of the Planet Vegeta era. 1 13
  • Palanti — Xuesaili’s daughter and Barros’s cousin; awakened as an unusually rare female Super Saiyan on Namek. 7 64
