Kazuki promptly shut his mouth.

Memorizing the multiplication table was harder for him than defeating the final Boss.

He decided to change the subject.

"Grandpa, has the snowman in the yard melted?"

Nakayama Hayao took over, his tone so gentle he seemed like a different person.

"It hasn't. Grandpa had someone cover it with a tarp. When we go home this afternoon, Grandpa will help you give the snowman a carrot nose."

The atmosphere in the hospital room was warm and relaxed.

Outside the window, winter sunlight filtered through the glass, casting mottled patches of light and shadow across the floor.

"Takuya, your father-in-law and mother-in-law have been busy at the station these past two days. They said they'd come see you in a couple of days. Pay more attention over here. If you need anything, call home anytime."

"All right, we won't disturb you any longer. Eri needs rest. Kazuki, go home with Grandpa. This afternoon, I'll take you out to build a snowman in the yard."

He ran to the bedside, stood on tiptoe, and kissed Eri on the cheek.

"Be good when you go home with Grandpa and Grandma. No misbehaving."
