Hisao Oguchi stopped writing and looked up.
"My father is getting on in years. He can't remain in the president's seat for much longer." Nakayama Takuya's tone was calm, as though he were discussing the weather. "Once he steps down, there'll be major changes to the senior management structure."
Hisao Oguchi's breath caught.
Who would normally dare to casually discuss a matter involving a change at the very pinnacle of the company's power?
"When I move up another step, this office—and the position of chief steward of the gaming division—will be handed over to you." Nakayama Takuya looked at him and lowered his voice. "You need to prepare in advance."
Hisao Oguchi's grip on his notebook tightened.

It was more than a title. It meant holding the power of life and death over a platform with tens of millions of installations worldwide, deciding the fate of countless third-party manufacturers.
He swallowed, forcefully suppressing the turbulence in his heart.
"Executive Director, I—"
"Don't rush to state your position." Nakayama Takuya cut him off. "The greater the power, the greater the responsibility. Sega has spread its board wide now: North America, Europe, Japan itself, arcades, home consoles, handhelds. If you're going to oversee the whole picture, diligence alone won't be enough. You need to build your own team and cultivate your own eye."
Hisao Oguchi nodded heavily.
"All right, get back to work." Nakayama Takuya waved a hand. "Pick out the documents that urgently need my signature. Handle the rest as you see fit."
Hisao Oguchi set down his wineglass, carried the documents to the desk, and swiftly sorted out several copies before handing them to Nakayama Takuya.
After the signatures were done, Hisao Oguchi left the office and closed the door behind him.
