Background / History
Harry grew up with the Dursleys, where he learned to be cautious, yielding, and reluctant to draw attention to himself. Arriving alone at King's Cross, he is helped by Molly Weasley and recognized by Vaughan after his lightning-shaped scar is exposed. Vaughan and Ron then welcome him into their Hogwarts Express compartment. 9 10
Although famous as the Boy Who Lived, Harry dislikes strangers staring at his scar and feels uncomfortable being treated as an object of public curiosity. Sharing sweets with Ron and Vaughan gives him an unfamiliar sense of friendship and belonging; on the train, he also meets Hermione Granger. 11
Harry is sorted into Gryffindor alongside Ron and Hermione. Their friendship develops through shared investigations, detentions, Quidditch, and repeated encounters with the threat surrounding the Philosopher's Stone. 14 25 36
During the confrontation with Quirrell in the World Within the Painting, Harry faces Voldemort directly, gains the temporary power of the Queen form, and learns that Dumbledore and Vaughan had manipulated much of the ordeal from outside the trial. The experience leaves him troubled by the adults' deception despite his survival. 116 120 122
In his second year, Harry takes possession of Tom Riddle's diary after defeating Draco Malfoy. He initially conceals it, communicates with it despite growing suspicion, and becomes increasingly anxious as its influence affects him and others around Hogwarts. 223 226 227
Appearance
Harry is a slight young wizard with green eyes, untidy dark hair, round glasses, and a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead. 9 10 11
- Lightning-shaped scar identifies him as Harry Potter to those familiar with his fame. 9 10
- Wears glasses; Draco derisively refers to them as broken. 12
- His appearance resembles both of his parents strongly enough for Ron to recognize James Potter in an old photograph. 154
Personality
Harry begins Hogwarts timid and eager to avoid rejection, shaped by years of neglect at the Dursleys. He is uncomfortable with fame, yet still hopes that attention will help him fit into the magical world. 10 11
He is deeply loyal to Ron and Hermione and repeatedly chooses danger rather than abandon them. He is also brave enough to confront Quirrell and Voldemort, even when he recognizes that he is outmatched. 110 112 115
Harry can be impulsive, secretive, and jealous. His desire to possess something that is solely his contributes to his decision to hide the diary from Ron and Vaughan, even after he begins to suspect it is dangerous. 227 260
