| Occupation/Role | Potions Master; Head of Slytherin House |
| First Appearance | Chapter 17 |
Background
Snape was born to Eileen Prince, a pure-blood witch, and an abusive Muggle father. The collapse of his parents’ relationship and the absence of family photographs at Spinner’s End suggest that this childhood continued to affect him deeply as an adult 65.
He was formerly a Death Eater and retained the Dark Mark. After Lily Evans’s death, his former ambitions, resentment, and ideals were replaced by grief, regret, and his continued attachment to Lily’s memory 103 111. Dumbledore used Snape’s feelings for Lily to compel him into serving as a spy, a coercion Snape never forgave 50 203.
At Hogwarts, he serves as Potions Master and Slytherin’s Head of House. Dumbledore assigns him to watch Harry Potter and, reluctantly, Vaughan Weasley, whose powerful wand and concealed nature concern the Headmaster 17.
Appearance
Snape is a tall, imposing wizard whose deliberately ominous presence unsettles students.
- Long, greasy black hair, sometimes hidden beneath a hood 17 242
- Hooked nose and harsh, icy expression 17
- Lifeless black eyes frequently compared to those of a venomous snake 22
- Dark, trailing professor’s robes and leather shoes 17
- Pale complexion after strenuous Legilimency 83
Personality
Snape is intensely private, impatient, and cuttingly sarcastic. He seldom wastes words, prefers harsh practicality to reassurance, and uses mockery to dominate his classrooms and conceal emotional vulnerability 17 83.
His hostility toward Harry is rooted in the conflict between Harry’s resemblance to James Potter and his eyes, which remind Snape of Lily Evans. This contradiction repeatedly destabilizes his composure: he despises Harry, yet remains fiercely concerned for his safety 17 123 288.
Despite his cynicism, Snape is capable of loyalty and professional pride. He supports Vaughan’s potion research, takes satisfaction in Vaughan surpassing him, and eventually agrees to assist the Dueling Club as its Potions instructor while dismissing it as “childish” and meaningless 44 312.
Abilities & Skills
Potions
Snape is a Potions master and an exacting instructor with extensive knowledge of potion ingredients, formulae, and brewing safety.
- Teaches Hogwarts Potions and harshly penalizes mistakes, particularly from Gryffindor students 21 23
- Brews advanced potions such as Draught of Living Death and Felix Felicis 49 169
- Recognizes the potential of Vaughan’s Magic Extraction Method and helps test, develop, and refine it 26 44
- Assists Vaughan’s recovery from the Snake Kiss curse 123
- Questions the cost, ingredient requirements, and Polyjuice-derived basis of Vaughan’s Protein Transfiguration Potion 351
Dark Magic
Snape is recognized as a Dark Magic master who developed Sectumsempra while still a student 16.
- Understands the emotional requirements and psychological dangers of Dark magic 16
- Uses the Petrification Charm against Harry when confiscating the diary 235
- Demonstrates overwhelming magical pressure while confronting Lucius Malfoy and DeSantis near the lake 324
- Formerly served Voldemort and is later pressured into returning to Voldemort’s service through DeSantis’s intervention 325
Legilimency and Occlumency
Snape is skilled in both mind-reading and mental defense.
- Nearly loses control of his Occlumency when Dumbledore invokes Lily’s eyes in Harry 17
- Teaches Harry Occlumency through prolonged, forceful Legilimency assaults 83
- Sustains a mental battle with Harry for more than an hour, leaving both of them physically exhausted 83
- Harry is warned that Snape may use Legilimency if given the opportunity 326
Patronus Charm
Snape’s Patronus takes the form of a doe, reflecting his enduring love for Lily Evans 111.
- Uses a Patronus message to receive urgent information from Dumbledore 49
- The Patronus’s form triggers memories of Lily and causes Snape to openly weep in private 111
Protective Intervention
Although his methods are often cruel or indirect, Snape repeatedly acts to protect Harry and other students.
- Is believed to have saved Harry when Dark magic interfered with Harry’s broom during Quidditch 62
- Confronts Quirrell in the Forbidden Forest over the Philosopher’s Stone and Hagrid’s monster 82
- Secretly sends Harry and Draco away from DeSantis’s presence before confronting the danger 324
- Uses a false theft accusation and detention to keep Harry from being alone during the Halloween danger surrounding the diary 288
Relationships
- Albus Dumbledore — Headmaster, handler, and longtime source of resentment. Snape serves Dumbledore but believes he manipulates children and hides behind “fate” 50 232.
- Harry Potter — Student and the son of Snape’s former rival. Snape’s hostility toward Harry conflicts with his need to protect Lily Evans’s son 17 83 288.
- Lily Evans — Snape’s deepest emotional attachment. Her death reshaped his life, Patronus, and loyalty 111 123.
- Vaughan Weasley — Potions student and research collaborator. Snape mentors Vaughan, supports his Magic Extraction research, and regards him as his favorite student despite frequent irritation 24 26 80.
- Quirinus Quirrell — Snape threatens Quirrell over the Philosopher’s Stone, leading Harry to initially suspect Snape of villainy 82.
- Lucius Malfoy — Former associate and Draco’s father. Their secret meeting is disrupted when Lucius activates the Dark Mark and brings DeSantis into Hogwarts 322 324.
- Draco Malfoy — Snape is Draco’s godfather and one of Lucius Malfoy’s closest confidants 322.
- Voldemort — Snape’s former master. He once served Voldemort as a Death Eater and is later compelled toward renewed service under DeSantis’s influence 124 325.
Story Role / Major Arcs
First-Year Surveillance and the Philosopher’s Stone
Dumbledore orders Snape to monitor Harry and Vaughan. In Potions lessons, Snape publicly humiliates Harry while recognizing Vaughan’s exceptional ability and awarding Slytherin points for his improved boil-curing potion 17 22 23.
Vaughan requests private instruction from Snape, who agrees. Their partnership develops when Snape successfully applies Vaughan’s Magic Extraction Method and commits resources to its further development 24 26.
Harry’s Occlumency Training
When Voldemort’s influence begins affecting Harry’s mind, Dumbledore assigns Snape to teach Occlumency despite both teacher and student objecting. Their lessons become punishing mental duels driven by mutual dislike, though Harry ultimately masters Occlumency and ends the training 82 83 90.
The Diary and Fate’s Backlash
Snape confiscates Harry’s enchanted diary after catching Harry and Ron insulting him. His attempt to interfere with the diary’s path draws Dumbledore’s warning that fate will retaliate, followed immediately by Snape falling down a staircase 234 235.
He later tries to keep Harry away from the diary’s dangers by arranging punitive detention, but clashes with Vaughan and Dumbledore over their apparent inaction 288.
DeSantis and the Unbreakable Vow
Snape confronts Lucius Malfoy after Lucius activates the Dark Mark and leads him to DeSantis. He protects hidden Harry and Draco before facing the unknown dark wizard, then chooses to serve Voldemort again under DeSantis’s pressure 324 325.
Afterward, Snape remains secretive and constrained by an Unbreakable Vow, communicating with Vaughan through indirect hints rather than direct answers 327.
Conflict over Vaughan’s Potion System
Snape reacts bitterly to Vaughan’s proposal to transform potion-making through a universal functional group and Muggle-derived scientific methods. Though he cannot deny the research’s results, he sees the incorporation of Muggle knowledge into magical potions as a betrayal of wizarding magic 349 351.
