|---|---|---|
| Recognizing Form | 49 90 | The foundational stage: identifying the shape and individual characters of Edict Scripts. Xu Yan had passed this stage by the time he prepared for the Demon Covenant Dharma Assembly. |
| Comprehending Meaning / Manifest Intent | 90 117 | Requires understanding the meanings of complete words and passages rather than merely recognizing individual characters. Xu Yan later reaches the Manifest Intent stage. |
| Manifest Dao and Myriad Phenomena | 158 159 | Divine sense can write Edict Scripts into the air and produce phenomena corresponding to their meaning. Xu Yan successfully writes the character for “wind,” creating a breeze. |
Background
Edict Scripts were once the writing of Qi Refiners and ancient Mystic Gate practitioners. Their forms imitate the principles and phenomena of heaven and earth; a script’s strokes are inseparable from the natural meaning it represents. By the end of the ancient era, they had largely been replaced by more accessible common writing systems. 12 49 90
Gongsun Yan teaches that the path has three principal stages: recognizing form, comprehending meaning, and manifesting the Dao. Although a master can use a manifested script to influence the environment, modern Edict Script techniques are generally less destructive than direct Mystic Qi divine abilities. 49
The path remains essential to Mystic Gate arts. Practitioners use it to decipher ancient inheritances, construct formations, prepare talismans, cultivate Dharma Eyes, and perform specialized movement methods. 49 61 74
Properties and Uses
Reading Ancient Daoist Texts
Edict Script is necessary to understand many ancient Daoist books and inheritances.
- Individual characters may be recognizable while complete phrases remain obscure and difficult to interpret. 61
- Xu Yan can initially understand only fragments of the Manifest Sage Method, despite recognizing its characters. 12 61
- The Gongsun Clan’s Big Dipper Seven Stars Edict Movement Method is comparatively accessible because its Edict Scripts were reorganized and simplified in the recent ancient era. 61
Formations and Talismans
Ancient formations are closely tied to Edict Script, with their transformations ultimately based on scripts that manifest natural principles.
- Mystic Gate arrays can be analyzed or dismantled by interpreting their Edict Script-based patterns. 12 176
- Edict Talismans can be reused repeatedly and possess a greater potential power ceiling than ordinary talismans. 112
- Ordinary modern talismans are simpler products, combining uncomplicated Edict Script with common script. 112
Manifesting Phenomena
At the highest stage, a practitioner engraves an Edict Script with divine sense and manifests the phenomenon contained within its meaning.
- Gongsun Yan writes a “wind and clouds stir together” script in the air, raising fierce winds and scattering clouds across hundreds of feet. 49
- Xu Yan later writes the basic “wind” script, producing a breeze from the void. 158
- Even simple scripts demand profound understanding, as every stroke carries part of the phenomenon’s meaning. 158
Movement and Perception Arts
Several Mystic Gate techniques depend directly on Edict Script proficiency.
- The seven-level Big Dipper Seven Stars Edict Movement Method establishes Edict Script star positions within a practitioner’s divine-sense range, allowing rapid shifts across prepared terrain. 61
- Its first level requires divine sense to cover one hundred zhang and uses the “fix,” “shift,” and “return” positions. 61
- The Manifest Sage Method uses Edict Scripts in the Niwan Palace to develop Dharma Eyes and strengthen divine sense. 74 112
- The completed “Slash” script of the Manifest Sage Dharma Eye enables divine-sense attacks against an enemy’s Niwan Palace. 168
Notable Edict Scripts
Miaoyuan Edict
The Miaoyuan Edict bears the meaning “Wonderful Dharma Blessed Fate” and manifests on Xu Yan’s palms. It is not an Innate Edict Script. 1 112
- The Wondrous Method aspect is particularly responsive to Mystic Gate arrays and can identify array eyes or dismantle restrictions. 12 41
- The Fortuitous Fate aspect responds to valuable treasures, including Spirit-Born Artifacts and concealed objects. 2 112
- It can appraise artifacts, formations, and rare objects by presenting their origins, functions, and limitations to Xu Yan’s consciousness. 12 33 38
- It can break Mystic Gate restrictions, including the seals within the Heavenly Master Treasure Talisman. 112
- Activation consumes divine sense heavily; attempting to force open a powerful ancient restriction can exhaust the user to unconsciousness. 31 41
Yin-Reversing Yang-Disordering Edict Script
An incomplete Ancient Era Edict Script discovered above a sea eye connected to the Unwaking Sea. It was created after ancient people observed the chaotic phenomenon of the sun setting while the moon rose. 152
- Its complete form is said to reverse yin and yang and overturn heaven and earth, though only its spatial-shifting effect initially remains. 152
- Xu Yan claims the fragmented script with the Miaoyuan Edict, enduring visions of inverted sun and moon, overturned mountains and rivers, and chaotic yin-yang. 153
- With the Miaoyuan Edict’s aid, Xu Yan later manifests it onto his palms and uses it to distort space around the waterside manor entrance. 174
- At Xu Yan’s current level, it can function as a defensive killing formation capable of binding an Immortal Aperture cultivator. 174
- It is used to trap Huangfu Xiu’s flying vessel during Xu Yan and Chongwu Chun’s ambush. 178
