Background / History
Merlin had been a trusted senior minister since King Uther's reign. Though not formally a Knight of the Round Table, he attends its councils as its magical adviser; matters he declares to concern magic or prophecy fall under his supreme authority. 8
He trained Arthur from childhood and helped establish the myth of the Sword in the Stone. Merlin privately knew the prophecy that its wielder would become king was a deliberate fabrication, since Arthur had been chosen from birth; over time, the lie acquired enough power to become reality, turning Excalibur into a genuine Sword of Selection. 17 62
When Gawain arrives in Camelot, Merlin delivers Arthur's summons and later foretells that the prince's fate has changed. Rather than allowing Arthur to dismiss Gawain as unfit for succession, Merlin argues that Arthur must accept the responsibility of educating his nephew as both knight and future ruler. 4 8
Merlin becomes Gawain's principal magical mentor. He teaches him that magic, glory, and stories are interconnected; urges him to create a legend beyond Arthur's shadow; tests his courage against the dragon crisis; and later advises him to gain renown in foreign lands to strengthen both his own name and Arthur's legacy. 33 35 37 53
To protect Gawain from Morgan le Fay's assaults, Merlin eventually sends him into other worlds to grow strong enough to resist her magic. 162
Appearance
Merlin is presented as an old man in white, usually carrying magical implements rather than knightly arms. 4 11 33
- Carries a wand, which he considers the equivalent of a knight's weapon. 11
- Uses a crystal ball for observation and prophecy. 8 36
- Keeps a large, privileged room in Camelot Castle filled with books, potions, plants, and wine—but no bed. 33
Personality
Merlin is patient and instructive, but he prefers probing questions and difficult tests to simple reassurance. He challenges Arthur's assumptions about courage, confronts Gawain over his lack of conviction, and deliberately tests whether Gawain's desire to rescue Brunhild is genuine. 9 37 58
He is also pragmatic about mythmaking. Merlin knowingly uses stories, prophecies, and public belief as tools of power, yet his schemes consistently center on preserving Camelot and ensuring that Arthur's glory endures after Arthur is gone. 17 53
Despite his manipulative methods, Merlin shows personal concern for those under his guidance. He agrees to aid Gawain after witnessing his heroic resolve, sends him away to protect him from Morgan, and heals him after he is grievously wounded. 58 162 165
Abilities & Skills
Illusion Magic and Magical Theory
Merlin defines magic as an illusion or shortcut rather than creation from nothing. He explains that an effect requires an existing basis—for example, water can be drawn from moisture in the air, but cannot be created in a world without water. 33
- Alters perception, including serving Gawain wine that tastes like soda before revealing the sensation as an illusion. 33
- Treats stories as “the greatest magic,” capable of creating glory, authority, and real consequences through belief. 33
- Maintains that magic is constrained by the materials, conditions, and connections already present in the world. 33
Prophecy and Fate Manipulation
Merlin's prophecies are accepted by Camelot because many of his past predictions have come true. 8
- Foresees that Gawain's fate has changed. 8
- Uses a crystal ball to monitor threats, including the dragon attacking Camelot. 36
- Created and sustained the Excalibur-selection myth until its original falsehood became a real magical rule. 17 62
- Understands Excalibur as a symbol of destiny whose transfer can end Arthur's connection to Britain. 51
Druidic Magic
Merlin identifies himself as a Druid and possesses abilities associated with animals and the natural world. 58
- Understands animal speech. 58
- Transforms into animals. 58
- Recognizes supernatural beings through magical signs, such as identifying the Green Knight as a primal nature deity from the grass growing beneath his feet. 17
Enchantment, Transformation, and Healing
Merlin can alter forms and apply restorative magic. 51 165
- Reverses the transformation of a boy into Excalibur through a spell. 51
- Heals Gawain after he is severely wounded by Morgan le Fay's forces. 165
- Works with Nimue to calm Gawain and restore his memories after his near-death experience leaves him confused and aggressive. 165
