Background / History

Ebony Chill originated with Alodi, the first Guardian. It was infused with Alodi's unique qualitatively transformed mana, allowing an otherwise ordinary material to endure as an artifact across ages. Its stated purpose was to protect humanity. 9 13 26

The artifact played a major role in Alodi's struggle against demons, including the defeat of the Nathrezim Kathra'natir. It retains memories of that conflict and reacts strongly to demons connected to it. 9 40 43

Councilor Alex carried Ebony Chill when he met Lister. Upon contact, dark-blue frost magic coiled around Lister's hand, while the artifact's manifested frost turned hostile toward Alex when he tried to take it back. 8 Afterward, Ebony Chill ceased responding to Alex, becoming inert in his hands. 9

When Lister awakened as an archmage, Ebony Chill flew across Dalaran to him. The Kirin Tor concluded that forcing ownership back to Alex was too dangerous; Antonidas formally arranged for Lister to retain the artifact and compensated Alex with access to his private library. 12 13

Appearance

Ebony Chill is a dark-blue staff topped by four azure ice crystals arranged from largest to smallest. Its fractured sections remain suspended through magic, and a twisted frost rune is carved into its handle. 8

Ebony Chill is protective of Lister and reacts aggressively to perceived threats against him. It blocked strangers from touching him in Silvermoon City, became restless when Belo'vir prepared a fire spell near him, and froze a water elemental that attempted to seize it. 24 32 48

Despite its destructive potential, it displays playful and domestic behavior. It circles Lister's home, is prepared to wake him with Frostbolt if he oversleeps, and chilled drinks for villagers during Winter Veil. 27 28

The artifact is also proud of its status and power, figuratively “straightening” itself when compared favorably to rune scarletstone. 29
