In the forty-third year of Konoha, the summer cicadas chirped incessantly, and the air was so stifling it seemed frozen in place. Uchiha Kyohaku's third year at the Ninja Academy passed steadily amid the same daily disguises, studies, and secret training. At eight years old, he had already ingrained the identity of "Uchiha Kyohaku" into his bones. Every word, every gesture, even every glance perfectly matched the image of an introverted, precocious, physically disabled orphan, without the slightest flaw.
Yet as the semester drew to a close, this peace was utterly shattered by explosive news.
"Have you heard? That Kakashi Hatake!"
"Which one?"
"That white-haired first-year kid who wears a mask all day and ignores everyone!"
"What about him?"
"He's applying to graduate early! He's only five!"
"You've got to be kidding! Graduating at five?"
The news spread through the entire academy like wildfire. From upperclassmen to lowerclassmen, every student was talking about it, their voices filled with disbelief, jealousy, curiosity, and a hint of bewilderment at being left so far behind.
Early graduation was not without precedent, but it usually happened during especially dire periods of war, when manpower was desperately short. In the relatively peaceful present, a five-year-old applying to graduate was simply unheard of. More importantly, the graduation examination was no joke. One had to pass an actual jōnin assessment.
On the day of the examination, the academy's largest training ground was exceptionally packed. Nearly all the teachers and students had come. The younger students crowded at the front, while the older ones stood behind them or on the stands to either side. Voices churned like a boiling cauldron, and the air was thick with restless anticipation. Even several academy higher-ups who rarely showed themselves had all arrived.
The most eye-catching figure, however, was the one seated at the center of the main stand—the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. Clad in his Hokage robes and smoking a pipe, his face appeared kindly yet unfathomable amid the curling smoke as he calmly watched the training ground below. His presence undoubtedly declared just how extraordinary this examination was.
Uchiha Kyohaku stood quietly in the third-year section, leaning on his crutch while his classmates excitedly whispered around him. Looking at the scene, his heart remained utterly calm, carrying even a detached sense of just as expected. Kakashi Hatake, son of Konoha's White Fang, Sakumo Hatake. The universally acknowledged peerless genius of the original story. Graduated at five, became a chūnin at six, a jōnin at twelve... The plot has finally reached this point.
His gaze shifted to the center of the training ground. Two people stood there. One was the stern-faced chūnin instructor from the Ninja Academy serving as the examiner. The other was a particularly small figure standing perfectly straight.
Spiky white hair, a black mask covering most of his face, and only a pair of half-lidded eyes visible—eyes far too sharp to belong to a child. A short sword that was overly long for his small frame rested on his back. He stared calmly ahead, seemingly oblivious to the tidal wave of stares and discussion around him, as though the entire world contained only him and the examiner before him.
That was the five-year-old Kakashi Hatake.
"Begin the examination!" At the loud announcement of a jōnin instructor, the grounds instantly fell silent.
The chūnin instructor did not let his guard down in the slightest. Though his opponent was only five years old, the Hokage himself was observing, and this was the son of the White Fang. He had to give his all as a sign of respect.
Whoosh! The chūnin instructor struck first, several shuriken flying toward Kakashi in a triangular formation, their speed and force kept at the proper level for a chūnin.
Kakashi moved. His movements were so fast they were nearly impossible to see! His small body displayed astonishing agility and explosive power. With only a slight turn and sliding step, he narrowly avoided the shuriken's paths. At the same time, he flung two shuriken backhandedly—not at the chūnin instructor, but at the positions where he might evade, predicting his movements in advance!
"So fast!" A chorus of hushed cries rose from the stands.
The chūnin instructor was startled as well and swiftly formed hand seals. "Clone Technique!" Two clones appeared and charged Kakashi together with the original.
A calm glint flashed through Kakashi's half-lidded eyes. He was not fooled. Almost instantly, he identified the chūnin instructor's real body—not through chakra sensing, which was still beyond him at this stage, but through the tiniest differences in movement habits and the flow of breath! He suddenly lowered his center of gravity and shot forward like a cheetah, charging directly at the chūnin instructor's real body!
"What?!" The chūnin instructor had not expected such decisiveness. He immediately changed tactics and threw a punch.
Kakashi neither dodged nor retreated. Using his small stature to his advantage, he skimmed perilously close beneath the force of the punch. At the same time, his right hand had somehow already gripped the hilt of the short sword on his back!
"The White Fang Blade?!" someone cried out from the stands.
The short sword was not fully drawn, revealing only a brief flash of cold steel. Kakashi precisely used it to deflect the chūnin instructor's following strike, producing a clear ring of metal against metal! He was utterly outmatched in strength and was knocked back several steps, but his footing did not falter in the slightest. He immediately assumed a defensive stance again.
The battle that followed became a complete display of Kakashi's individual abilities. His taijutsu was fluid and efficient, without a single unnecessary movement. Every dodge, every block, every counterattack was terrifyingly precise, as if tempered through countless trials. His shuriken techniques were tricky and accurate, always attacking from the most unexpected angles. He even cleverly used the Substitution Technique and Transformation Technique midway through the fight. Though they were merely basic Three-Body Techniques, his timing and creativity in using them were astounding.
He was like a machine born for battle—calm, efficient, and sharp. Within that small body lay combat wisdom far beyond his years and killing techniques that were almost instinctive.
Finally, after another crisp clash, the chūnin instructor leaped backward of his own accord and stopped. Looking at Kakashi, who was breathing lightly but whose eyes remained sharp, he took a deep breath, turned toward the stands, and announced loudly, "Examination passed! Kakashi Hatake is qualified to become a genin!"
Silence.
After a brief stillness, a tremendous uproar erupted around the training ground, mixed with astonishment, envy, and disbelief!
"He passed! He really passed!"
"He's five... He's practically a monster!"
"As expected of Lord White Fang's son..."
Hiruzen Sarutobi rose from his seat with a pleased yet complicated smile on his face and applauded vigorously. Then thunderous applause broke out across the entire grounds.
At the center of the field, Kakashi breathed lightly as he slowly pushed his short sword back into its sheath. Faced with the cheers of the crowd and the Hokage's approval, his expression remained largely unchanged. Yet in those exposed eyes, there seemed to be an almost imperceptible easing, as though he had completed some predetermined goal. It vanished in an instant, replaced by his usual indifference.
Uchiha Kyohaku lightly applauded along with the crowd, but his gaze passed through the cheering people and settled on that small white figure.
A genius? he murmured inwardly. Yes, without a doubt. But what kind of harsh, even cruel, training and expectations had such genius been built upon? And beneath that calmness beyond his years, what pressure and loneliness were hidden?
Kakashi's early graduation was like a boulder thrown into a lake, stirring immense waves in the hearts of Konoha's young generation of ninja. It drew a clear, despair-inducing starting line, and it also foreshadowed the arrival of an even more magnificent era.
Kyohaku withdrew his gaze and lowered his head, looking at his right foot, which still carried a slight limp.
The gap between them was like an uncrossable chasm.
Yet there was not the slightest trace of discouragement or jealousy in his eyes. Instead, they held an even quieter determination.
He had his own path to walk. A path unlike that of any genius—slow, yet unwaveringly firm. A path that belonged to him alone.
The applause gradually faded, and the crowd began to disperse. Leaning on his crutch, Kyohaku turned and silently walked toward the academy gates. The summer sunlight fell upon him, stretching his shadow long behind him. The road ahead was still very long.
