Shifting Tides

The spring of Konoha's forty-fourth year brought little warmth. Instead, a stifling sense of an approaching storm hung over the village, weighing on the hearts of every somewhat knowledgeable shinobi.

The fragile peace that had lasted for roughly ten years was collapsing at a visible pace. Uchiha Kyohaku frequently visited the library and hospital, and he could sense this change in countless small details.

Expired mission reports showed a clear increase in records of border frictions and small-scale clashes. In the past, most missions had been C-rank or B-rank assignments to eliminate bandits or escort merchant caravans. Now, there were more A-rank and even S-rank mission summaries such as "drive off suspected Hidden Rock Village reconnaissance squads" and "repel Hidden Mist Village infiltration forces."

The number of injured shinobi in the hospital had quietly risen. When they gathered to drink in taverns, they no longer talked about amusing mission stories, but about which border outpost had exchanged fire again, which small country was struggling to survive between two great powers, or even which one had fallen into civil war. The air was thick with oppressive tension and anxiety for the future.

"I heard fighting broke out again in the Land of Rain. Even that old Hanzō can barely keep things under control..."

"The Land of Earth isn't peaceful either. Those rockheads from Hidden Rock Village have reinforced their troops at the border again..."

"The brutes from Hidden Cloud Village are even more arrogant, causing trouble everywhere..."

In their struggle for resources and greater influence, the major shinobi nations constantly courted or oppressed the surrounding smaller countries. The accumulated hatred and conflicts were like dry kindling—one spark was all it would take to ignite an inferno. Having endured two great wars, the ruling powers of the five major shinobi nations and their absolute control over their subordinate shinobi villages had also weakened. Acts of aggression and internal unrest rose one after another across the lands.

The shadow of the Third Shinobi World War loomed over the entire shinobi world like a giant hand slowly closing. Even ordinary Konoha villagers could sense that unsettling undercurrent from the sudden increase in patrols, slight fluctuations in commodity prices, and the increasingly grave expressions on the shinobi's faces.

Konoha's upper ranks had undoubtedly noticed all of this. As the leader of the greatest shinobi village, the pressure on the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, was easy to imagine.

Unease, fear, excitement, anticipation... all kinds of emotions spread among the children. The teachers wore grave expressions as they did their best to soothe the students, but they could not hide the concern in their eyes.

Uchiha Kyohaku stood amid the crowd, leaning on his crutch as he listened in silence. Yet his heart was clear as a mirror. So it really has begun... The Third Hokage's decision is practical. Accelerating training and selecting the outstanding ones to enter the front lines early is an inevitable choice on the eve of war.

This order was like a watershed, brutally severing the innocent life of the academy from the cruel reality of the shinobi world.

The two events that followed made this "acceleration" even more apparent.

The first concerned Might Guy. Rather than ninjutsu or shuriken, the thick-browed boy was more passionate about doing five hundred laps around the training grounds on his hands. Always full of energy, he was regarded by many as dead last. Not long after the order was announced, he actually applied for early graduation as well!

The examination process was equally eye-catching. Guy's ninjutsu and genjutsu remained dreadful, but his taijutsu erupted with astonishing power and speed. His reckless fighting spirit, as though he were burning away his youth, moved even the jonin examiners. In the end, relying on his burning passion and perseverance in taijutsu beyond that of ordinary people, he successfully passed the examination.

Seven-year-old Might Guy graduated early and became a genin.

The second event shocked everyone once again. Kakashi Hatake, the genius who had graduated at the age of five the previous year and set a new record, submitted an application for promotion to chunin just one short year later!

A chunin examination at six years old! When the news spread, everyone was struck speechless with shock. The examination was once again held to the highest standards. It was said that Anbu directly under the Hokage had even been present to supervise it. The result was without suspense. With overwhelming strength, terrifyingly calm tactical thinking, and extraordinary efficiency in carrying out missions, Kakashi easily passed the examination.

Six-year-old Kakashi Hatake was promoted to chunin.

A taijutsu fanatic considered dead last, and a cold, peerless genius—both broke free from the academy's restraints at a speed beyond all common sense and threw themselves into the coming tide of the times.

On the training grounds, the students watched Guy wave his arms with burning fervor. They watched Kakashi coldly put on his chunin forehead protector—although, due to his young age, it was merely placed on record, and he was not required to immediately undertake chunin missions. All kinds of complicated emotions intertwined within them.

Uchiha Kyohaku stood quietly at the edge of the crowd, watching it all. He could clearly feel the wheels of the era accelerating as they rolled forward. The prelude to war had already begun.
