On the same day Uchiha Kyohaku knocked on Orochimaru's door, two figures of authority beneath Konoha's shadows and light also took notice, in their own ways, of a somewhat unusual name on the list of students about to graduate.
Root's Dark Chamber
Shimura Danzo sat deep within the dim Root base, with the latest assessment reports for Ninja Academy graduates and prospective graduates spread before him. The murky yellow light illuminated half his face, while the other half remained buried in deep shadow, making him appear all the more gloomy. His fingers passed over one name after another, each accompanied by notes on potential rating, clan background, personality analysis, and suitability for recruitment into "Root."
His gaze paused briefly on one name: "Uchiha Kyohaku."
The notes beneath it were lengthy, yet filled with negative terms: "Permanent disability in the right foot; severely limited mobility," "Taijutsu and shuriken scores far below average," "Withdrawn and introverted personality; distant relations with his clan," "Chakra volume assessment: below average for a genin," "Aspiration: apply to remain at Konoha Hospital in a medical position."
Danzo's lips twisted into an undisguised sneer, and he let out an almost inaudible cold snort.
"Uchiha..." he muttered in a low voice, the sound echoing through the silent chamber, filled with the wariness and disgust he inherently held toward that surname. "...And they produced such a piece of trash."
A lame Uchiha, who did not think about overcoming his obstacles and fighting, but instead ran off to become a medical ninja? It was practically a stain upon those eyes that might one day awaken! In his extreme beliefs, the Uchiha Clan's power could only reveal its true worth through battle, hatred, and darkness, becoming a hidden weapon for protecting Konoha. This sort of behavior—avoiding battle and seeking comfort—was nothing but cowardice and degeneration in his eyes.
"A medical ninja?" he repeated the term coldly, as if it were something filthy. "Hiding in the rear and fiddling with herbs and chakra—what use could that be? He isn't even qualified to become nourishment for Root."
He did not even bother to carefully read the scattered positive evaluations that followed: "Chakra control assessment: excellent," "Medical ninjutsu internship performance: exceeded expectations." In his eyes, a ninja unable to move quickly or participate in high-intensity combat—especially an Uchiha—had already lost most of his value and was not worth investing any resources in.
Without pausing, his finger passed over the name "Uchiha Kyohaku," as though brushing away an insignificant speck of dust, and his gaze shifted to the other names marked "high potential," "controllable personality," and "suitable for recruitment."
"Trash." He delivered his final verdict on the child he had never met, then completely cast the name from his mind.
Hokage's Office
Meanwhile, sunlight streamed through the enormous windows of the office atop the Hokage Building, forming a stark contrast to Root's darkness.
The Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, was likewise reviewing documents, wisps of smoke rising from his pipe. A similar list lay before him, but it was thicker, and its notes focused more on the students' overall development and future plans rather than simply assessing them as tools.
His gaze also fell upon the name "Uchiha Kyohaku." He read the notes beneath it: "Parents died after being caught up in a mission," "Right foot severely injured and permanently disabled," "Above-average grades overall (excellent theory, weak practical performance)," "Outstanding chakra control," "Performed well during internship at Konoha Hospital's Animal Training and Rehabilitation Unit," "Applied to remain in the hospital's medical department after graduation."
Hiruzen Sarutobi set down his pipe and sighed softly. A complicated expression appeared on his face, one mixed with regret, sympathy, and a trace of helplessness.
"Uchiha Kyohaku..." he murmured the name, seemingly able to picture a silent Uchiha orphan leaning on a crutch and struggling to survive beneath the blows of fate.
"What a pitiful yet strong child." He sighed. With both parents dead and a disability of his own, yet without blaming the heavens or others, he had instead found another path through medical ninjutsu. Such resolve deserved recognition.
He supported Kyohaku's wish to remain at the hospital. Konoha Hospital truly needed more personnel, especially medical ninja with good chakra control. If the child remained in the rear, he could both make use of his strengths and avoid the brutal slaughter of the front lines. Perhaps that was the best arrangement. It aligned with Hiruzen's longstanding belief that every young sprout of Konoha should be protected as much as possible, especially in these turbulent times.
Yet on the other hand, seeing the surname "Uchiha" lightly plucked at the string deep within his heart concerning the increasingly tense relationship between the village and the Uchiha Clan. An Uchiha who chose to stay away from battle and integrate into the village's medical system was, in itself, a thought-provoking sign. Was he an outlier among the Uchiha? Or some... potential for something better?
After pondering for a moment, he finally picked up his pen and wrote on Uchiha Kyohaku's application: "Special circumstances. Approved for hospital internship; position to be determined based on performance." Unlike Orochimaru, he did not grant any direct convenience, instead choosing a course of action more in line with procedure and more prudent.
His feelings toward the child were complicated. There was sympathy and concern, but also a trace of scrutiny and faint expectation born from his position as Hokage. He hoped that this Uchiha, who had chosen a different path, could truly integrate into Konoha rather than become another destabilizing factor.
But that was all he could do. As Hokage, he had too many matters to consider. A disabled Uchiha child who had chosen to become a medical ninja was, on the grand chessboard before him, ultimately just an insignificant little piece that needed to be properly placed. His gaze soon moved to the more dazzling names on the list, those that required more of his energy, attention, and guidance, such as... Kakashi Hatake.
Two lists, two perspectives, two completely different attitudes, yet they arrived at a similar conclusion—disregard.
Whether it was Danzo's undisguised contempt or the Third Hokage's sympathy, confined only to procedural arrangements, neither truly saw the energy and determination hidden behind the name "Uchiha Kyohaku," far beyond anything they imagined.
And that was precisely what Uchiha Kyohaku needed most. Beneath the shadows where no one watched, he could better weave his own web and quietly grow.
