In Konoha Year 45, Uchiha Kyohaku turned ten. Time seemed to have left few traces of childhood on him, instead settling into a composure and restraint far beyond his years.
On the surface, he was an ordinary medical-nin intern at Konoha Hospital. Dressed in a slightly oversized white medical uniform and leaning on a crutch, he moved through corridors and wards filled with the scent of disinfectant. He was mainly responsible for work in the Animal Training and Rehabilitation Unit, though he was occasionally assigned to regular wards to help with simple wound cleaning, dressing changes, and basic healing techniques. He worked carefully and with steady hands. Though quiet, his calmness and reliability, so mismatched with his age, gradually led some of the medical staff to overlook his disability and youth.
Yet that was only one side of his life. The other was hidden deep within Konoha Hospital, inside a highly classified laboratory controlled by Orochimaru.
Every week, on one or two nights or during his days off, Kyohaku would silently make his way to this underground space, lit by cold white lights and filled with sophisticated instruments and the smell of formalin. This was the core location of his "deal" with Orochimaru.
"Very good... Keep the Sharingan active. Focus your chakra into the ocular meridians and sense those unique fluctuations of Yin-nature chakra..." Orochimaru's hoarse voice echoed through the laboratory. Dressed in a white research coat, his golden snake-like eyes stared intently at the thin sensors attached to Kyohaku's head and around his eyes. Complex streams of data constantly flickered across the instrument screens.
Kyohaku sat calmly in a specially made chair. In his right eye, a single tomoe slowly rotated, giving off an eerie red glow. He controlled his chakra as instructed, while his mind rapidly recorded and analyzed every one of Orochimaru's commands, every reading from the instruments, and every subtle sensation he experienced while activating his Sharingan.
Orochimaru displayed an almost obsessive interest in the Uchiha bloodline limit. Even though Kyohaku had only awakened a single tomoe so far, to this scientist, it was still a precious window into the mysteries of the Sharingan.
"Incredible..." As Orochimaru looked at the specific brainwave patterns and Yin-nature chakra concentration patterns on the screen, far more active than those of ordinary people, his tongue instinctively swept across his lips. His eyes gleamed with the excitement of someone who had discovered treasure. "With only one tomoe, the precision of chakra perception and the speed of neural responses are already enhanced so significantly... No wonder the Uchiha Clan produces so many geniuses. These eyes truly are a masterpiece of creation..."
His research covered multiple areas: the specific physiological changes and alterations to chakra meridians when the Sharingan was activated; the abnormal degree of visual nerve activation; the roots of its resistance and affinity toward genjutsu; and even attempts to analyze the mysterious energy within ocular power that involved the "reflection of the heart."
Kyohaku cooperated with all of it. He allowed Orochimaru to draw small samples of blood and somatic cells, record the chakra flow patterns throughout his body when he activated and deactivated the Sharingan, and even carefully describe changes in his sensations during certain non-invasive genjutsu tests.
The process was not without risk. Orochimaru's gaze would sometimes grow far too fervent, as if he wanted to dissect Kyohaku along with those eyes. Yet Kyohaku always remained absolutely calm and cooperative, while the forensic examiner's soul deep within him greedily absorbed every scrap of knowledge.
He himself was deeply curious about the seed buried within his bloodline: the Sharingan. Where did this power come from? Why did it require intense emotional stimulation? What exactly were the conditions for its evolution? Was pain alone enough? And what principles lay behind those legendary Mangekyo abilities?
After assisting with experiments, he would often pose carefully considered questions to Orochimaru—questions that sounded naive, yet struck directly at the heart of the matter.
"Orochimaru-sama, is the evolution of the Sharingan related only to the intensity of one's emotions? Or does it require a deeper understanding and control of chakra itself?"
"Different Uchiha awaken their eyes at different ages and possess different abilities. Aside from talent, could that be related to the nature of their spiritual energy?"
"What is the fundamental difference, on the chakra level, between the 'truth' these eyes see and what ordinary people see?"
These questions would sometimes surprise Orochimaru slightly before he revealed an even more interested smile. He appreciated this kind of thoughtful inquiry rather than blind fear or worship. Gradually, an odd and delicate relationship formed between them, somewhere between researcher and test subject, mentor and student.
Kyohaku never took the initiative to inquire into Orochimaru's other research. He focused only on the mysteries of his own bloodline. He knew that the more he knew, the more dangerous it would be, but when it came to the core secrets of his own body, he had to learn as much as possible.
Over this year of secret research, he gained enormously. Not only did he come to understand the limits and applications of the one-tomoe Sharingan more deeply—enhanced dynamic vision, observation of subtle chakra flow, and basic detection and application of genjutsu—but through Orochimaru's instruments and data, he also gained a preliminary understanding of how this bloodline limit functioned from biological and chakra-based perspectives.
At the same time, he came to understand more clearly just how terrifying and brilliant Orochimaru was. The breadth of his knowledge, the sharpness of his mind, and the sophistication of his experimental methods all far surpassed what ordinary people could imagine. Making a bargain with a tiger required constant vigilance, but the rewards were equally astonishing.
Whenever he left that icy laboratory and returned to the sunlit hospital corridors, Kyohaku felt as though he were passing between two entirely different worlds. One was a white world filled with the scent of disinfectant, pursuing healing and life; the other was a gray realm permeated by formalin, exploring the taboos of life and the origins of power.
And he, Uchiha Kyohaku, walked calmly along the boundary between the two, using every resource available to him, absorbing knowledge, gathering strength, and steadily uncovering the secrets hidden deep within his bloodline. The red single tomoe that occasionally surfaced quietly in his eye when no one was around also seemed to grow ever more profound through this continuous exploration.
