In the late summer of Konoha's forty-fifth year, the air still carried lingering heat, but there was also a hint of parting. The Ninja Academy's graduation season arrived as scheduled, and the training grounds were once again crowded with people. This time, however, the protagonists were a new batch of faces.
Uchiha Kyohaku stood at the edge of the crowd, leaning on his cane as he calmly watched the scene unfold. Unlike Kakashi and Guy's earth-shattering graduation last year, this year's graduation assessment seemed much more "normal."
Ebisu, wearing round glasses and carrying himself like a little adult, passed the examination smoothly with his solid theoretical foundation and reasonably fluent ninjutsu. He adjusted his glasses, his face showing barely restrained pride and anticipation for an "elite" future.
Kurenai Yuhi, a girl with striking red hair, had already begun to reveal her talent for genjutsu. She displayed exquisite technique during the assessment, winning wave after wave of applause.
Asuma Sarutobi, the Third Hokage's son, had an unlit cigarette dangling from his mouth—though an examiner soon scolded him into taking it out. He carried himself with a touch of rebellion and unruliness, but his skills were not lacking. Both his taijutsu and his use of Wind-nature chakra were notably well-structured.
Shizune, the girl who always seemed somewhat quiet and mature for her age, received special praise from the examiners for her foundation in medical ninjutsu. She had clearly inherited part of Tsunade's teachings.
One after another, they received brand-new Konoha forehead protectors from the examiners, their faces alight with youthful radiance and anticipation for the future. Cheers, applause, embraces from family... the scene was filled with joy and hope. Kyohaku watched silently, as though he were watching a heartwarming play that had nothing to do with him. His path had long since diverged from this conventional track.
Yet beneath that overflowing joy, a heavy and oppressive undercurrent was quietly stirring in Konoha Village. An unbelievable piece of news, one that soon sparked countless hushed discussions, spread among the ninja like a plague.
Sakumo Hatake, the "Konoha White Fang," renowned alongside the Three Sannin... had committed suicide.
The moment the news arrived, it felt as if the entire village fell silent for an instant. That name had once represented Konoha's sharp edge, a guarantee of mission success, a nightmare that made countless enemies tremble at its mention. How could he? How was it possible?
The details, like shards of broken glass, gradually pieced together into a suffocating truth: during a mission of vital importance, he had chosen to abandon the mission in order to save comrades trapped in desperate straits, causing the nation to suffer tremendous losses. Responsibility for the failed mission and the overwhelming accusations drowned him like a tide. Criticism from villagers, and even some comrades—accusing him of "failing to obey ninja rules" and "putting personal matters before public duty"—pierced the heart of a top-tier ninja who regarded honor as his life like poisoned needles.
In the end, tormented by endless public pressure and self-reproach, Sakumo Hatake, only thirty-two years old, ended his life in his own home with the White Fang tantō that had made his name famous throughout the ninja world.
After the enormous shock came complicated silence and even fiercer private discussions. Some mourned the fall of a hero, some scorned his "weakness," while more people reflected on those cold and merciless "ninja rules."
Inside the Hokage's office, the pipe in Hiruzen Sarutobi's hand remained still for a long time, his face shrouded in deep exhaustion and sorrow. He had lost a capable subordinate, a loyal ninja, and witnessed a tragedy unfold. He had tried to suppress the criticism, but the rumors spread far faster than he could control. He could only stare silently at the document concerning Sakumo Hatake's memorial and compensation.
Deep within Root, Danzo merely gave a cold snort upon receiving the news. "Foolish sentimentality. Ninja have no need for pointless bonds. All they need is absolute loyalty to the village and the resolve to complete their missions. His death proves precisely that." In his eyes, the White Fang's death was nothing more than the inevitable outcome of a weak man being eliminated. It could even serve as a negative example to warn Root's members.
The atmosphere in Orochimaru's laboratory was even stranger. When Orochimaru heard the news, he was observing a cellular sample. His golden snake eyes flickered slightly, while an incomprehensible, almost pleased curve touched his lips.
"Sakumo Hatake... is dead?" he murmured hoarsely, as if savoring the news. "Killed by gossip because he saved his comrades? Heh... how ironic. Such great power, yet defeated by petty human hearts and useless emotional restraints..." He turned to look at the silent Kyohaku beside him. "Do you see it, Kyohaku? So-called ninja rules and bonds with comrades can sometimes be the deadliest poison. Only by transcending all of it and pursuing absolute power and truth can one escape such a pathetic ending."
Kyohaku lowered his head and arranged the laboratory equipment, his face expressionless as he replied blandly, "Yes, Teacher."
Yet his heart was far from as calm as he appeared. Sakumo Hatake's death was like a cold mirror, reflecting the cruelest underlying logic of this ninja world: missions stood above life, and rules outweighed emotions. Even a Kage-level powerhouse, once he violated that iron law, would be silently crushed by the entire system.
This only strengthened his conviction: he could never place his fate in the hands of any external rules or others' judgments. He had to possess absolute power and take control of his own path of evolution.
He could not help but think of the silver-haired boy who was only six years old and had suffered such a tremendous upheaval just after becoming a Chunin—Kakashi Hatake. Where would his future lead?
Konoha's forty-fifth year was a time when hope and despair intertwined, when new life and death coexisted. The young graduates set off toward their respective futures with dreams in their hearts, while the fall of a hero cast a shadow over the village that would not easily fade, quietly changing the trajectories of many lives.
Uchiha Kyohaku withdrew his gaze, leaned on his cane, and silently turned away from the bustling graduation grounds. He headed toward that cold, real laboratory. His path lay ahead.
