Background / History
The Third Kazekage’s Disappearance
In spring of Konoha Year 47, the Third Kazekage disappeared after a routine border patrol. Neither his body nor evidence of his survival was found. Sunagakure began an extensive internal search, but suspicion soon spread among its own personnel and toward Konoha and other major nations 44.
The disappearance left the village without a leader and heightened the risk of war. Kyohaku Uchiha recognized it from his previous-life memories as a precursor to the Third Shinobi World War 44.
Kumogakure’s Invasion
Kumogakure exploited the leadership crisis by launching a long-distance surprise attack. Its elite force passed through the waters of the Land of Hot Springs and struck the eastern coast of the Land of Wind before advancing into Sunagakure’s heartland 49.
The AB Combo—A and Killer B—nearly destroyed Sunagakure’s frontline. Killer B transformed fully into the Eight-Tails and bombarded the defenders with Tailed Beast Balls, while A attacked with Lightning Release-enhanced speed and strength 49.
Jonin Rasa prevented the collapse through Magnet Release: Gold Dust Technique. His defenses withstood repeated Tailed Beast Ball bombardments, while enormous Gold Dust arms and weapons contained A long enough for the village’s forces to regroup. Chiyo reinforced him with elite puppeteers and the Chikamatsu Collection of Ten Puppets, while Ebizo coordinated the defense. With its momentum broken and supply lines overstretched, Kumogakure withdrew 49.
Appointment of the Fourth Kazekage
Although the invasion was repelled, Sunagakure suffered catastrophic losses in manpower, supplies, and morale. Chiyo and Ebizo assembled department heads, clan representatives, and distinguished Jonin to choose a new leader 50.
Chiyo nominated Rasa on the strength of his defense against the AB Combo. Some questioned his youth and limited experience, but the elders argued that immediate protective power mattered more than conventional qualifications. Rasa accepted, swore to protect the village, and was formally recognized as the Fourth Kazekage 50.
War on Multiple Fronts
Sunagakure fought Konoha along the Land of Rivers frontier. Baki confronted Kyohaku directly and reached a temporary stalemate, while Sunagakure’s puppeteers and poison-equipped squads threatened Konoha personnel behind the front lines. Ebizo also led four elite Jonin into the combat zone, forcing Kyohaku to summon Manda and use explosive techniques to secure his teammates’ escape 59 60 61.
Ōnoki opened another front by sending Kitsuchi through the Land of Bears into the Land of Wind. Iwagakure advanced methodically, constructing fortifications and supply points while capturing border outposts, mines, and resource sites 64.
With Chiyo, Ebizo, and Baki already committed elsewhere, Rasa appointed Pakura commander of the force sent to intercept Iwagakure. Despite concerns that her prestige could make her a political rival, he granted her full authority and prioritized the village’s survival 64.
The Kikyo Mountain Castle Campaign
By Konoha Year 48, more than a year of attrition had exhausted Sunagakure’s limited reserves. Its strategy of sustaining the war through captured resources had failed. Konoha attacks disrupted supply lines, the wounded accumulated, and medical supplies became critically scarce 69.
Rasa committed the village’s remaining fresh reserves to an assault concealed within a massive sandstorm. Konoha contracted its defenses under Orochimaru, then used apparently abandoned positions and supplies to lure Sunagakure deeper into the Land of Fire 68 70.
The apparent victories encouraged soldiers to break formation and loot. Rasa suspected that the advance was too easy, but chose to preserve momentum and ordered an attack on Kikyo Mountain Castle, presenting its wealth as resources Sunagakure desperately needed 70.
Sunagakure initially pressured the fortress with coordinated Earth Release and Chiyo’s Puppet Corps. Orochimaru then attacked the exposed rear with Manda and elite Konoha troops, while Kyohaku targeted puppet-control threads, Earth Release users, and commanders with explosive kunai 71.
Chiyo and Ebizo temporarily checked Kyohaku’s advance, and Rasa intervened with Gold Dust Burial. Manda intercepted the attack, allowing Orochimaru to engage Rasa directly. Torifu Akimichi’s fresh reserves completed a three-sided encirclement and broke Sunagakure’s remaining cohesion 72 74.
Rout and Military Losses
Rasa ordered a breakout to prevent the army’s annihilation, but the withdrawal became a rout. Orochimaru deliberately left an apparent escape route and drove the fleeing forces through prepared ambushes. Konoha particularly targeted commanders, Chunin, Jonin, and puppeteers 74 75.
Rasa remained at the rear, using Gold Dust Walls and Shields to protect survivors until they escaped toward the Land of Wind 75.
| Measure | Reported Loss or Condition |
|---|---|
| Elite army losses | More than 70% destroyed 75 |
| Puppeteer units | Fewer than one in ten remained 75 |
| Campaign’s initial strength | More than 7,000 troops 78 |
| Remaining combat-capable troops | Fewer than 3,000 78 |
| Seriously wounded | More than 800 78 |
| Overall injuries | Almost every survivor was injured 78 |
| Puppet Corps losses | Exceeded 80% 78 |
| Jonin killed | 47 78 |
| Recovery outlook | Restoring the village’s former strength was expected to require more than a decade 75 |
Withdrawal and Negotiations
Konoha followed its victory with a three-pronged offensive under Orochimaru, Torifu, and Kyohaku. Sunagakure’s scattered resistance, strongholds, and delaying actions were overwhelmed, costing it the positions it had occupied in the Land of Rivers for more than a year 77.
Rasa ordered Chiyo to evacuate the wounded and medical personnel, while Ebizo organized the remaining fighters and prepared defenses inside the Land of Wind. Rasa stayed behind alone to delay the pursuers 78.
Kyohaku challenged him and fought his Gold Dust techniques to a standstill. Recognizing that further resistance would endanger Sunagakure’s surviving army, Rasa admitted defeat and requested negotiations 79 80 81.
The preliminary agreement required Sunagakure to abandon all strongholds, supplies, and influence in the Land of Rivers. Konoha agreed not to pursue beyond the border. Orochimaru demanded that Rasa, Chiyo, Ebizo, and other senior leaders attend formal ceasefire talks at Kikyo Mountain Castle three days later; responsibility for subsequent negotiations later passed to Danzō 81 88.
Sunagakure’s defeat also invited further opportunism. The Third Mizukage identified its southeastern coast as practically undefended after Iwagakure withdrew substantial forces to address a crisis at home, and selected the weakened village as a new target 87.
Postwar Caution and the Chunin Exams
Defeat did not immediately end Sunagakure’s resentment toward Konoha. During Konoha Year 51, it planned a congratulatory delegation to Minato while seeking concessions and quietly assessing the reformed village’s strength 112 168.
Reports of Konoha’s rapid suppression of the Nine-Tails changed that approach. Rasa ordered a substantial border withdrawal, accepted Chiyo and Ebizo’s advice to avoid provocation, and sent Baki to the Joint Chunin Exams with instructions to maintain a low profile 203.
- Forest of Death: Ira directed a coordinated attack using puppets, poison, Wind Release, and controlled kunai to take an Amegakure team’s scroll before withdrawing 207.
- Individual matches: Yashamaru lost narrowly to Gekko Hayate; Ira defeated Kumogakure’s Atsui with Wind Release and poisoned blades 209.
- Promotion: Ira was promoted to Chunin 209.
- Observation: Baki studied Konoha’s rapid reconstruction and recognized its organizational resilience 208.
By Konoha Year 54, Sunagakure avoided crossing the Land of Rivers boundary and voluntarily ceded some smaller mission commissions to Konoha under the name of cooperation. Its immediate goal was to preserve peace and gain time to recover 217 218.
Alliance and Reconstruction
Following Akatsuki’s defeat, Sasori was assigned to Sunagakure’s custody under the villages’ prewar agreement. He was identified as a Sunagakure rogue ninja who had transformed his body into a puppet; during the battle, he wielded the Third Kazekage puppet and its iron sand 240 242 244.
Rasa and Ebizo regarded their earlier alliance with Konoha as increasingly advantageous after Kyohaku’s victory over Pain. Rasa instructed Baki to encourage Temari, Kankurō, and especially Gaara to build relationships with Konoha’s younger generation 245.
Rasa also approved Kyohaku’s plan to open the mountain barrier between the Lands of Rain and Wind. Destroying the 800-meter ridge created a thousand-meter-wide passage, allowing rain to reach the border desert. The Land of Wind subsequently joined the Land of Earth in requesting a Five Kage Summit on further cooperation 247.
Over the next two years, three opened routes increased desert rainfall and helped establish six oases. Sunagakure caravans traded minerals and spices for food and medicinal herbs, while newly cultivated desert fruits became a symbol of the project’s success 248.
Four years after the transformation began, more than a dozen oases dotted the affected region. Near the passage exits, they connected into a green corridor, and Sunagakure survey teams were exploring the newly vegetated land 255.
Geography and Settlement
- Location: The Land of Wind 50.
- Original environment: Endless yellow sand, dry air, and angular rock buildings eroded by wind and grit 50.
- Resource sites: Mines and other economically important locations became targets during Iwagakure’s invasion 64.
- Changing border landscape: Kyohaku’s passages admitted moist monsoon winds, supported vegetation that anchored the sand, and enabled oasis agriculture near the Land of Rain 248 255.

Military Abilities and Tactics
Puppet Warfare
- Puppeteers operate their creations through chakra threads and can coordinate multiple puppets from concealed positions 60.
- Combat puppets carry blades, poisoned needles, toxic mist, and shields; their lack of pain or fear makes them effective assault units 71.
- Small scouting puppets can approach underwater and disrupt enemy formations with poisoned spikes 207.
- Severing control threads or incapacitating the operator can immediately disable the puppets 60 71.
- Chiyo’s White Secret Technique: Chikamatsu Collection of Ten Puppets serves as an elite combat resource 49 72.
Poison and Specialized Weapons
- Poison-coated puppet weapons and senbon inflict injuries that continue worsening after the initial strike 60 73.
- Elite squads combine poisoned weapons, manipulated blades, Wind Release, and toxic mist in coordinated attacks 61.
- Ira uses poisoned blades alongside Wind Release in individual combat 209.
Elemental Warfare
- Wind Release: Used for cutting attacks, ranged pressure, and coordinated assaults; Baki’s techniques are particularly sharp and fast 59 61 73.
- Earth Release: Massed users deploy rising excavations, mudflows, rock pillars, and stone spears to attack fortress walls and foundations 71.
- Sandstorms: Conceal troop movements and accompany large-scale offensives 68 70.
- Sand control: Yashamaru combines sand manipulation with hidden weapons 209.
Bloodline Specialists
- Rasa’s Magnet Release: Gold Dust forms large defensive barriers, weapons, shields, restraints, and burial attacks. It repelled the AB Combo but could not reverse the wider army’s collapse at Kikyo Mountain Castle 49 74 80.
- Pakura’s Scorch Release: Her bloodline ability and reputation made her a suitable commander against Kitsuchi’s invasion force 64.
