"So," Dumbledore chose his words carefully as he asked Mrs. Gary, "has anything strange or unusual ever happened to this child?"
"Strange things—" At the mention of those words, the smile vanished from the old woman's face. She launched into a shrill, displeased rebuke. "Nothing strange has ever happened to little Ye Ting! He is a truly good child, yet he has been dealt such an unfortunate fate. No upright gentleman would ever suspect such a good child."
"Yes, yes, I am not suspecting him. I merely wish to gain a thorough understanding of him." Even a great wizard and headmaster like Dumbledore could not handle the nearly enraged old woman at this moment. It took him quite some time to convince her that he meant no harm.
How could that be? he thought. The Quill of Acceptance clearly wrote his name in the Book of Admittance. That proves he is neither a Muggle nor a Squib, and that he truly possesses magical talent. Before young wizards learn to properly control magic, such talent always causes all sorts of accidents. Yet Mrs. Gary, the person in charge, has noticed nothing at all. Is it because his talent is too weak, or... At that thought, he recalled that person again, then buried his doubts and thoughts deep within his heart.
"So," Dumbledore finally made his request, bringing the conversation to an end, "as the headmaster of Hogwarts School, I hope to admit Ye Ting as a student. I have come to deliver his letter of acceptance and to meet him."
"Oh, another school's letter of acceptance. I knew our little Ye Ting would always be recognized." Mrs. Gary replied cheerfully. "Still, you are currently the only headmaster to come in person. But he will have to make the decision himself. Even Eton College has sent him an acceptance letter."
With that, Mrs. Gary climbed out of her chair. "I'll take you to his room. Little Ye Ting should be reading right about now."
As she spoke, she led Dumbledore up the stairs.
At Wool's Orphanage, Ye Ting was a legend.
When he was only a few months old, Mrs. Gary found him at the orphanage entrance while going out to collect the newspaper.
At the time, he was wrapped in a set of adult clothes. The only thing on him that could prove his identity was a plastic card bearing the two characters "Ye Ting." Combined with his Asian appearance, Ye Ting became his name.
From a very young age, Ye Ting displayed his genius. Whether it was learning to speak, walk, or read, he was far faster than children his age. Moreover, he was remarkably sensible and never gave the adults any cause for concern.
Although Ye Ting's skin color made him stand out at Wool's Orphanage, his maturity and wisdom beyond his years easily made him the children's leader. Whether older or younger than him, all the children wholeheartedly accepted his authority.
Ever since Ye Ting turned five, the caretakers at Wool's Orphanage had felt that their workload had greatly decreased—the children gradually became obedient and sensible under Ye Ting's management, and some of the older children even took the initiative to help with household chores.
More than that, Ye Ting was also an unmatched genius at the nearby primary school. No difficult problem could stump him in class, and the teachers and headmaster praised him endlessly. After graduating from primary school, he had even received an acceptance letter from the famous Eton College.
But no one knew that this renowned genius was actually a transmigrator from another world.
In his previous life, Ye Ting had been a university student in Mie City. His family was fairly middle-class, and his university ranked among the top ten in the country. He majored in computer software, a highly popular field at the time. Though he could not be called a winner in life, he was still above average among his peers.
Besides that, Ye Ting himself had been a homebody and was quite familiar with all sorts of anime, comics, and games.
Before his transmigration, he had taken advantage of the May Day holiday to watch Avengers: Endgame. Since he had been single since birth, he had gone alone as usual. On his way back to school, lightning suddenly fell from the sky. The unlucky Ye Ting was swallowed by the electric flash and vanished without a trace, becoming an urban legend for a time.
It was this accident that led to his transmigration.
In truth, he had not been struck to death by lightning.
At the time, Ye Ting had only seen a flash of light. A bolt of lightning suddenly appeared before him, splitting open a black rift—the air, sand, stones, and even Ye Ting himself, everything was sucked clean into that rift. Only afterward did he understand that it was the legendary spatial rift.
He fell through that opening into a boundless, fantastical space. This chaotic realm was filled everywhere with bizarre and dangerous currents. Similar rifts occasionally appeared without warning. These rifts usually lasted only an instant before vanishing without a trace, but things would always be spewed from them—living and nonliving objects alike, from planets to specks of dust—before being swept into the dangerous currents and disappearing.
In Ye Ting's view, this space was likely an extradimensional passage outside the universe that connected different universes, while the spatial rifts led to various worlds. The rifts appeared because of accidents and were then instantly repaired on their own. Only in rare circumstances would they bring matter from a universe into the extradimensional passage, while the currents were the legendary spatial-temporal turbulence. All matter drawn into them would be utterly annihilated.
