There, they finally saw the ship that was quite famous even in Greek mythology—the Argo, also known as the world's first ship. Naturally, that meant a seafaring vessel; ordinary little boats did not count.
It was a magnificent three-masted sailing galley, dozens of meters long and barely large enough to carry a hundred people. Given the technological conditions of this era, building such a vessel was no easy feat.
The Argo had been built from wood that would not rot even when soaked in water. At its prow stood a statue of the goddess of victory, carved from a plank cut from a sacred tree. As a sailing galley, its sides had a row of openings for oars.
In short, such a large ship moored by the shore was indeed a rare sight in this age.
