Carrying the secret he had heard from the bartender and a bellyful of doubts, Jason left the tavern.
He had no idea that after he left, the bartender began clearing their table. Suddenly, the man shuddered, and his eyes turned vacant.
"Did I... just take a nap? What did I just do? Why can't I remember? Did I fall asleep?"
As though awakening from a dream, the bartender rubbed his face, then suddenly pulled out the piece of gold Jason had given him as a tip.
"This... where did this come from? Did I steal it? Or..."
Unable to make sense of it, the bartender immediately tucked it back into his clothes warily, then hurried away.
No one noticed that after he left, a handsome man clad in an ornate mage robe and holding a staff appeared out of thin air. Then, amid a ripple of distorted space, he vanished again, leaving only a satisfied smile behind.
Jason had never realized that a bartender could not possibly know so many secrets about mages.
