Having lived in the Type-Moon world for so long, Ye Ting felt that he had come to understand this world's rules and distinctive traits quite well.

First, one must define a metaphysical "will," which formed the foundation of this world:

It could be simply understood as a mechanical command, similar to an instruction in a program.

The four (or fewer) fundamental forces were the faint manifestations of this "will" in the phenomenal world.

These fundamental forces could evolve within the world into more complex instructions and more complex matter. Though everything as a whole was chaotic and disordered, because basic rules existed, certain exceptional parts would always emerge from that disorderly "chaos." This matter and these instructions were akin to ancient life in the primordial ocean.

Such things could be understood as inertia—the tendency to continue moving unless acted upon by an external force. Tropism, irritability, instinct, desire, reason, and so on were merely increasingly complex forms of it.

Of course, this concept was merely a metaphysical description with little practical significance. It only served as groundwork for the examination that followed.

This "will" was called in the Type-Moon worldview.

Naturally, this kind of "will" existed in many worlds, but the "will" at the very foundation of the Type-Moon world was the Swirl of the Root.

The so-called "Root" actually had analogues in every culture—the Tree of Life in Jewish Kabbalah, the tree of existence in India's Bhagavad Gita, the World Tree of Norse mythology, the golden apple tree of Greek mythology, and the Tree of Knowledge in the Bible. One could even add a modern mythological system—Darwin's tree of evolution.

Using a "tree" as a metaphor for the structure of "existence" had a long history. Life was differentiation and branching.

"Root" referred to the root system of the tree
