Background / History
Childhood and identity
Tom Marvolo Riddle grew up at Wool's Orphanage. From childhood, he could deliberately control his magic: move objects, command animals, speak Parseltongue, and torment other children. He also stole possessions from fellow orphans and kept them as trophies. 255
He was born to Merope Gaunt, a witch of the Gaunt family, and the Muggle Tom Riddle Sr. His hatred of his Muggle heritage drove him to murder the Riddle family, then alter his uncle Morfin Gaunt's memories so that Morfin confessed to the crime. The murder was used to create Marvolo Gaunt's Ring Horcrux. 251 255
At Hogwarts, Riddle opened the Chamber of Secrets and recorded the event in a diary. His full name can be rearranged into the declaration, “I am Lord Voldemort.” 82 248
Acquisition of founder relics
While employed by Borgin and Burkes, Riddle cultivated Hepzibah Smith's trust through charm and flattery. After she showed him Hufflepuff's Cup and Slytherin's Locket, he poisoned her, modified her house-elf Hokey's memories to frame her, and disappeared with both artifacts. 269
His Horcrux choices reflected his desire for trophies of historical and magical importance, particularly relics connected to Hogwarts' founders. 248 255
First fall and the diary's return
Voldemort's original reign brought widespread persecution and terror before the Ministry of Magic and Albus Dumbledore defeated him in the First Wizarding War. His Horcruxes allowed him to survive without a body. 184 325
A memory fragment within Tom Riddle's diary later possessed Ginny Weasley, used her to reopen the Chamber of Secrets, and commanded its Basilisk. The fragment confronted Ye Ting, abandoned the Basilisk when it was defeated, and was ultimately destroyed when Ye Ting shattered the diary with the Infinity Blade. 94 96 99
Resurrection and renewed war
Peter Pettigrew restored Voldemort to a physical body through a potion requiring bone from Voldemort's father, Pettigrew's severed hand, and Harry Potter's blood. Voldemort emerged tall, thin, and pale, then summoned his Death Eaters through the Dark Mark. 235
He punished unreliable followers while rewarding Pettigrew with a silver hand, retained Lucius Malfoy's support among pure-blood families, promised to free the Lestranges from Azkaban, and praised Barty Crouch Jr. for infiltrating Hogwarts. 236
Following the arrest of many Death Eaters and their families, Voldemort abandoned his slower plan to rebuild influence within the Ministry. He accelerated recruitment among giants, centaurs, werewolves, and Dementors, then used attacks against Muggles to pressure the Ministry into releasing his followers. 300 302
Defeat and death
At Azkaban, Ye Ting exploited Voldemort's anger and insecurities while secretly establishing an illusion over the battlefield and a Dimensional Anchor that prevented spatial escape. 316 318 321
Ye Ting revealed that Voldemort's Horcruxes had been destroyed, including Nagini and the unrecognized Horcrux within Harry Potter. With no remaining route of resurrection or escape, Voldemort chose a direct clash of Killing Curses against Ye Ting. 315 321 323
Ye Ting's magical power overwhelmed Voldemort's, ending the battle at dawn and killing the Dark Lord permanently. 324
Appearance
After his resurrection, Voldemort possesses a tall, thin, pale body and a distinctly serpentine appearance. 235
- Flat, snake-like face with slit-like nostrils. 235 238
- Bright red, cat-like eyes with narrow pupils. 235
- Extremely long, pale fingers described as spider-like. 235
- Hairless, scaled-looking skin; his pre-resurrection form is dark reddish and malformed. 235
- Typically wears black robes and carries a wand. 235 236
Personality
Voldemort is intensely arrogant, treating his survival through Horcruxes as proof that he stands above ordinary mortality. Even after the destruction of his safeguards and the collapse of his position, he refuses to admit weakness and continues to present himself as the invincible Dark Lord. 321 322
He is cruel and sadistic, tormenting Harry with the Cruciatus Curse and attempting to break his will with the Imperius Curse. 238 He is also ruthless toward allies: he abandoned the Basilisk when it became a liability and regards followers primarily as instruments of his power. 96 236
Despite ruling through fear, he understands the value of selective rewards and punishments. After rebuking the Death Eaters who abandoned him, he avoided killing them outright, rewarded Pettigrew, and preserved Lucius Malfoy's usefulness among pure-blood families. 236
Ye Ting's analysis attributes Voldemort's obsession with superiority, control, and pure-blood supremacy to his childhood insecurity, abandonment, and hatred of his own Muggle ancestry. Voldemort reacts with fury because the assessment exposes weaknesses he refuses to acknowledge. 316 317
