History
Origins and demonic corruption
The Orcs originated on Draenor as a clan-based people led by individual chieftains. Before demonic manipulation, they followed shamanistic traditions centered on ancestral spirits and the elements. 339 858
Ogres are identified as the Orcs’ ancestors. Though physically weaker than Ogres, Orcs’ high reproductive capacity enabled them to overthrow Ogre rule and become Draenor’s dominant race. 899
Kil’jaeden deceived the shaman Ner’zhul into believing that the Draenei intended to exterminate the Orcs. The resulting Horde slaughtered and enslaved Draenei communities. 339
To increase their strength, many Orcs drank the blood of the pit lord Mannoroth. The corruption turned their originally brown or red skin green, greatly enhanced their combat power, and intensified their irritability and bloodlust. 339 846 875
Invasion of Azeroth
Gul’dan opened the Dark Portal in the First Year of the Dark Portal, allowing Orc clans to establish a forward camp in the Black Morass and begin their invasion of Azeroth. 331
Ye Ting’s investigation of captured Orcs concluded that they were not native to Azeroth. His subsequent report documented their physiology, language, clans, homeland, political structure, military practices, and fel-tainted blood. 338 339
After Gul’dan fell into a coma, Orgrim Doomhammer challenged Warchief Blackhand to a Mak’gora, killed him, and became Warchief. Orgrim publicly denounced Gul’dan’s warlocks and initially called for fel magic to be outlawed. 368
The Horde eventually withdrew from Azeroth after a series of defeats. The surviving Orcs were later confined in Alliance-funded prisoner-of-war camps, subject to continued supervision. 511 514
Renewed conquest of Draenor
During the Draenor conflict, Gul’dan coerced most Orcs into drinking Corrupted Blood. Brown-skinned Orcs who refused—including wandering Orcs and members of small clans—were captured and transported to the Black Temple for use as Shadow Council test subjects. 882
Under Blackhand, the Horde sought to conquer Draenor’s remaining peoples, including the Draenei, Ogres, Gronn, Arakkoa, Primals, Sporelings, Sabermaw, and Podlings. 854
Appearance
Orcs are tall, heavily built humanoids distinguished by their tusks, powerful musculature, and broad jaws. Fel corruption commonly gives them a vivid green complexion. 338 340 875
- Build — Generally stronger and more physically imposing than humans. 356 900
- Tusks — Prominent lower tusks are a defining trait, though their size varies between individuals. 338 340
- Natural coloration — Brown-skinned Orcs represent the uncorrupted population. 882
- Fel coloration — Orcs who drink Corrupted Blood develop green skin. 339 846
- Fel influence — Corrupted Orcs are often characterized by heightened bloodlust, aggression, and diminished rationality. 356 847
Society and Culture
- Clan structure — Orc society is organized around clans, each with its own identity, chieftain, and warriors. The Horde unites these clans but does not erase their separate interests. 331 857
- Leadership through strength — Status is closely tied to martial ability; Mak’gora duels can determine Horde leadership. 368 918
- Warrior hierarchy — Peons and slaves perform farming, construction, and other exhausting labor. Warriors are the lowest class recognized as having basic social standing. 371 918
- Traditional beliefs — Traditional Orcish shamanism venerates elemental forces and ancestral spirits. The souls gathered around Oshu’gun are regarded as ancestral spirits. 339 858
- Honor and glory — Horde warriors value a defiant death in battle over surrender or passive retreat. 504
- Shattered Hand custom — Shattered Hand Clan warriors mutilate or amputate their left hands as proof of loyalty, often replacing them with crude weapons or tools. 840
Combat Characteristics
- Natural physical advantage — Ordinary Orcs are generally estimated to be half a level to one level stronger than comparable humans because of their innate physical qualities. 900
- Aggressive warfare — Orc armies rely on direct charges, axes, hammers, swords, spears, javelins, and throwing axes. 455 916
- Fearlessness — Orc warriors routinely maintain assaults despite heavy casualties and are willing to trade their lives for an opportunity to kill stronger foes. 891 916
- Organizational weakness — Fel-corrupted Orcs can be harder to discipline and coordinate than human armies; confusion and panic disrupt them severely during ambushes or sudden reversals. 356
- Ranged limitations — Horde forces field relatively few archers. Their axe and javelin throwers are powerful but lack the range and accuracy of dedicated archers. 916
- Demonic warfare — Horde warlocks employ fel and shadow magic, while later forces field death knights, Infernals, and fel-powered siege weapons supplied through demonic influence. 457 875 916
