History
At the outset of the Third Northern War, Velen is described as a devastated former Temerian province. Southwestern Velen is effectively lawless, with bandits, slave catchers, monsters, and starving civilians filling the vacuum between Nilfgaardian forces and scattered irregulars. 1
Following Temeria's retreat, the Bloody Baron occupies Crow's Nest with Temerian veterans and becomes Velen's strongest armed power. Nilfgaard tacitly accepts his local rule, in part because its forces struggle to operate through the region's marshes and see little value in committing resources to the impoverished province. 19
Ron arrives in Velen after being found near the coast and begins building a force from Calradic soldiers, refugees, and local recruits. His early camp develops into the Calrad Mercenary Company, whose purple banner bears a golden lion. 1 7 15
The Baron grants Ron a manor and recognizes him as his military commander, giving Ron's organization legitimacy in dealings with nearby villages. After the Baron departs Crow's Nest, he entrusts Ron with the manor's affairs and asks him to protect Tamara. 22 57
By the later chapters, Ron is widely regarded as Velen's lord despite formally maintaining allegiance to Nilfgaard. His territory offers protection to villagers, nonhumans, mages, and craftsmen while expanding its military, trade, and industrial capacity. 71 82 93 106
Conditions in Velen
War and Lawlessness
- Roads pass burned villages and corpses of civilians who died while trying to flee famine and war. 9
- Bandits, slave catchers, monsters, Nilfgaardian patrols, and armed scouts all operate within the region. 1 18 40
- Nilfgaardian patrol activity increases after Ron's forces eliminate one of its reconnaissance squads. 35
- The Merchants' Guild seeks influence in Velen through agents, intelligence gathering, and trade routes. 35 69
Local Population
- Refugees, farmers, displaced villagers, and former soldiers form much of Velen's population under wartime conditions. 6 15 71
- Ron's forces provide work, shelter, training, and protection to people displaced by violence or shipwrecks. 6 15 33
- Villagers of Lindenvale accept taxes and military obligations in exchange for protection, reopened trade routes, and the promise of a future garrison. 71
- Nonhumans fleeing Redanian persecution are permitted to settle in Ron's territory if they obey local law and pay taxes. 106
Governance and Military Presence
Crow's Nest
Crow's Nest initially serves as the Baron's stronghold and the largest armed power in Velen. Its influence extends over nearby villages, though the fortress itself has limited strategic value beyond that control. 19 24
After the Baron leaves, Ron assumes responsibility for the manor's administration. His authority is supported by a disciplined standing force, fortified estates, local patrols, and agreements with villages. 57 68 71
Calrad Mercenary Company
- Formed from Ron's Calradic troops, local recruits, refugees, and later allied fighters. 7 15 29
- Uses a purple banner with a golden lion crest. 15
- Maintains training grounds where recruits learn formation warfare, close-quarters combat, archery, and shield techniques. 33 41
- Operates patrols to clear bandits, monsters, and raiders from trade routes. 22 71
- Expands its standing army using veterans as the core of new units and seeks additional garrison sites throughout Velen. 68
Intelligence Network
- Contacts in Lindenvale and other villages report through weekly visits, markets, and family connections to Calrad Manor. 40
- The network identifies suspicious armed groups surveying troop movements and the Baron's patrols. 40
- Ron later orders the activation of an intelligence station in Novigrad as Velen faces growing political pressure. 60
Economy and Development
Trade
- Nearby villages supply grain, livestock, tools, cloth, iron, bricks, tiles, and craftsmen, while Ron's forces offer weapons, armor, patrol protection, and monster clearance. 22
- Velen uses the Oren as its principal everyday currency, while Crowns and Florins are reserved for major transactions. 40
- Ron's administration seeks regular village contracts rather than dependence on seized goods. 22
- A planned maritime route through Skellige is intended to connect Novigrad with Nilfgaardian coastal cities and eventually support a much larger army. 91
Industry
- Calrad Manor develops a brewery using surplus grain and swamp-grown fruit, including raspberries, blackberries, and juniper berries. 40
- A paper mill is planned to reduce dependence on paper imported from Novigrad. 40
- Waterwheels power workshop equipment, including a forging hammer used to produce spearheads and other military supplies. 46
- Erwin explores a water-powered wire-drawing machine to increase chainmail production. 63
- By the time Ron returns from Novigrad, the manor has a paved road, residential growth, a commercial street, workshops, docks, and small cargo vessels. 106
Strategic Importance
- Velen's swamps and forests complicate the movement and deployment of large Nilfgaardian formations. 7 100
- Crow's Nest, Rilton Estate, and Calrad Manor can form a triangular network for rapid garrison deployment across the region. 70
- Gors Velen and Calrad Manor lie on opposite sides of the Embla River's mouth; controlling both would threaten Nilfgaard's maritime supply route into Velen. 100
- Ron considers Velen likely to become a battlefield and prioritizes preserving its people over holding territory at all costs. 98
