Background / History
As a young man, Dumbledore befriended Gellert Grindelwald and initially entertained plans to overturn the Statute of Secrecy and reshape the wizarding world. Unlike Grindelwald, however, he argued that any changes should minimize sacrifice and treat Muggles fairly. Their ambitions fractured when Aberforth confronted them over Ariana's condition as an Obscurial; the ensuing duel ended with Ariana's death. Dumbledore abandoned his ambitions, while Grindelwald fled. 185 186 187
Dumbledore later visited Tom Riddle at his orphanage to bring him to Hogwarts. He immediately recognized Tom's cruelty, demonstrated after making the boy return stolen possessions, and remained wary of him despite Tom's academic brilliance and popularity at school. 164
He eventually defeated Grindelwald and became the wizard credited with restoring peace during Grindelwald's war, though the acclaim was inseparable from personal losses within the Dumbledore family. 287
As Hogwarts Headmaster, Dumbledore has taught for nearly a century and is regarded as the greatest wizard of his age. He nevertheless describes himself as “merely an apprentice upon the path of magic.” 48 162
Appearance
Dumbledore is an elderly wizard with long silver-white hair and beard, pale blue eyes behind half-moon spectacles, and a hooked nose. His appearance is traditionally wizardly, though his clothing can be conspicuously eccentric. 8 43 212
- Often wears colorful robes, including a deep-purple robe patterned with irises. 43
- Carries the Elder Wand during his confrontation with Grindelwald. 441
- Maintains a calm, gentle demeanor even in tense situations. 43 534
Personality
Dumbledore is patient, humorous, and outwardly gentle. He listens carefully to students, offers reassurance without dismissing danger, and frequently uses sweets or light humor to ease difficult conversations. 43 445
His compassion is tempered by deep regret. He openly acknowledges errors in his judgment of Sirius Black, Tom Riddle, and his own youthful pursuit of power. Rather than claiming control over others' choices, he increasingly accepts that people must retain responsibility and agency for themselves. 162 723 1031
He deliberately avoids executive authority despite believing he could serve as Minister for Magic effectively. Dumbledore considers power dangerous because it magnifies a person's hidden flaws and can turn “the greater good” into a justification for harm. 722 723
