Background / History

The Holy Spirit Cult built much of its prestige by awakening Martial Souls for commoners' children free of charge. Its work made Martial Souls widely known among ordinary people and enabled the growth of Soul Master academies and organizations. 2

By the era of the Douluo Federation, Awakening Day is a major occasion: children receive their Martial Soul awakenings at Holy Spirit Cult branches, while groups such as the Holy Spirit Cult and Spirit Pagoda compete for talented new Soul Masters. 3

Awakening and Inheritance

Martial Souls are ordinarily inherited through bloodlines. As a result, children from commoner families without Soul Master ancestors have a comparatively low chance of awakening a Martial Soul with Soul Power; exceptionally high Innate Soul Power is rarer still. 4

Types

Bloodline Martial Souls

Most Martial Souls are passed down through family bloodlines. Their form may be inherited across generations, such as the Dragon-Head Cane and Serpent Cane of the Dragon Snake Family. 81

Inherited Martial Souls can also be weapon-, beast-, control-, support-, healing-, or food-system types. A Soul Master's Martial Soul strongly influences their combat role and the cultivation environment best suited to them. 27 36 85

Noumenon Martial Souls

Noumenon Martial Souls originate from the wielder's own body rather than inherited bloodline. They are commonly associated with commoner-born Soul Masters and are regarded as the strongest type of Martial Soul commonly available to them. 4

Their quality depends on the importance of the bodily organ or organs they encompass. Martial Souls involving the heart or brain are top-grade Noumenon Martial Souls, while one encompassing the entire body is the absolute highest grade. 4

• A Noumenon Martial Soul encompassing the entire body can possess spiritual attributes because it includes the brain and all spirit-related bodily components. 4
• Spiritual-attribute Martial Souls are especially valuable in the Soul Spirit era, since insufficient spiritual power can prevent a Soul Master from absorbing further Soul Spirits. 4
• The Body Sect particularly values Noumenon Martial Soul Masters and possesses Legacy Soul Spirits tailored to them. 88

Twin and Same-Type Twin Martial Souls

Twin Martial Souls provide an additional nine Soul Ring slots compared with a single Martial Soul, giving their wielder a major long-term advantage under otherwise equal conditions. 7 40

Same-Type Twin Martial Souls are a distinct variant. Both Martial Souls must acquire Soul Rings simultaneously to overcome cultivation bottlenecks, but their high compatibility can allow them to merge or develop into a self-body Martial Soul Fusion Skill. 51 64

Soul Rings and Soul Spirits

Martial Souls, Soul Rings, Soul Spirits, and spiritual power form an interconnected cultivation system. Soul Spirits grant Soul Rings, while a Soul Master's spiritual power determines whether they can accommodate another Soul Spirit. 4

Soul Skills

Soul Skills are abilities granted through Soul Rings and Soul Spirits. Their effect is shaped by the relationship between the Soul Master, Martial Soul, and Soul Spirit rather than being wholly random. 8

• A strong Soul Spirit paired with a weak Martial Soul generally favors directly inheriting the Spirit's talent. 8
• A strong Martial Soul paired with a weaker Soul Spirit generally favors merging the Spirit's ability into the Martial Soul. 8
• Neither method is inherently superior; the optimal choice depends on the individual Soul Master and Soul Spirit. 8
• Strong counters can allow a low-ring Soul Master to defeat a much stronger opponent in theory. 38

Innate Domains

Some Martial Souls possess innate domains that come directly with the Martial Soul. These are distinct from acquired domains, which may arise from Soul Skills, Battle Armor, mental power, or bloodlines. 16

An innate domain is normally especially compatible with its Martial Soul, while an acquired domain is normally more suited to its wielder. 16

Martial Soul Fusion Skills

Martial Soul Fusion Skills combine compatible Martial Souls into a stronger ability. Compatibility is a critical factor in their power; Same-Type Twin Martial Souls may reach at least ninety percent compatibility and can potentially reach complete compatibility. 64

Quality and Suppression

Martial Soul quality can directly affect combat. When two weapon-type Martial Souls clash, a higher-grade Martial Soul may suppress a lower-grade one even if the lower-grade wielder has greater Soul Power. 15

The novel distinguishes between genuinely useless Martial Souls and Soul Masters who fail to develop their potential. Although useless Martial Souls exist, ability, cultivation, Soul Spirits, and technique can substantially change a Martial Soul's practical strength. 4 27 40
