The cell smelled rather strange, but thankfully, the vents brought fresh air to the prisoners, and the air circulation system had been running constantly, keeping them from being suffocated by the overpowering stench.

Silence's helper in the prison, Kafka, was lying on her bed resting. Though it was still early, for prisoners lacking any entertainment, perhaps the only way to pass the time was to sleep.
