History
Nine-Tails Night and the Uchiha relocation
In the aftermath of Nine-Tails Night, Konoha rebuilt while suspicion fell heavily on the Uchiha Clan. Villagers had seen a Sharingan in the Nine-Tails' eyes, and the Uchiha had not participated in the village's defense because Root had prevented them from doing so. Root did not disclose this, allowing resentment toward the clan to deepen. 3
Danzō used the situation to propose relocating the Uchiha from the village center to the outskirts under the pretext of easier inspection. Despite Uchiha opposition led by Fugaku, Konoha's leadership and jōnin approved the measure. The isolated district subsequently made around-the-clock surveillance by Anbu and Root easier. 3
Internal conflict over Uchiha Feng
After Feng left the village, Konoha branded him a rogue ninja and issued a bounty for his execution, accusing him of defecting and desecrating heroes' graves. The Uchiha instead believed Root had captured him for experimentation, leading to armed clashes between the clan and Root. Hiruzen intervened, punished both sides, and ordered an end to the fighting. 16
Konoha later endured an external political crisis after its shinobi investigated Tea Country. The Fire Daimyō cut Konoha's funding, while other daimyō threatened collective action against the village. Konoha ended the dispute by apologizing and sending the White Fang swordsmanship legacy and Jūbei's notes to Tea Country in exchange for a statement clearing it. 28 31
Escalation with the Uchiha
Feng's return to Konoha as a Mangekyō Sharingan user caused a major security crisis. His Susanoo cleaved Hokage Rock in half, prompting an emergency meeting among Konoha's elders and placing the village on high alert ahead of the Uchiha clan assembly. 83 85
Konoha's leadership avoided immediately attacking the assembly because the Uchiha had not committed a crime warranting extermination, and Hiruzen feared that acting against the will of the village's clans would cost him their recognition as Hokage. 85
The Uchiha later broke away from Konoha. Those who remained behind were subsequently massacred by Itachi, Orochimaru, and the masked Uchiha involved in the attack on Minato Namikaze. 97 110
Konoha Crush
During Konoha's joint Chūnin Exams, Orochimaru and Otogakure initiated the Konoha Crush while Sunagakure forces invaded from the east. The attack scattered Konoha's defenders across multiple fronts, leaving the village vulnerable to Feng's parallel operation. 190 191 193
Feng's forces attacked from the abandoned Uchiha compound, deploying roughly six hundred ninja. Their objectives included the Book of Seals, secret scrolls, ninja-tool and supply depots, and Hanabi Hyūga. 191
The Uchiha destroyed Danzō and Root, seized dozens of stored Sharingan, and spared young Root members so they could spread news of the clan's revenge. 196 Kaguya Shū's team stole the Book of Seals and secret archives, while Hōzuki Sakutsuki's squad captured Hanabi and two unsealed Hyūga children. 197 198
Konoha's recorded losses included Hiruzen's death, Root's annihilation, the defection of the Kurama Clan, the abduction of Hyūga children, and the theft of major stores of supplies, medicine, ninja tools, forbidden techniques, and secret scrolls. 203 229
Loss of the southern Land of Fire
While Konoha fought the Konoha Crush, Uchiha forces under Kazue and Bosawa captured the southern peninsula of the Land of Fire. Konoha later sent more than three thousand ninja to retake the territory. 200
Feng personally devastated the counteroffensive with Shadow Clones, Formless Sword Intent, multiple half-body Susanoo, and Perfect Susanoo. Only a few hundred Konoha ninja escaped the subsequent rout. 201 202
The loss of southern territory angered the Land of Fire's daimyō, who withheld aid from Konoha. 229
Tsunade's alliance with the Land of Whirlpools
After becoming Fifth Hokage, Tsunade sought negotiations with Feng because Konoha could no longer safely fight the Land of Whirlpools, Iwagakure, or Kumogakure while facing internal shortages and hostile borders. 229 234
Konoha accepted Feng's ceasefire conditions: Kakashi would return his Sharingan, and Konoha would seek an Uchiha ancestral relic. Tsunade signed the resulting treaty. 235 236
The Land of Whirlpools publicly announced a truce and alliance with Konoha the following day. The agreement removed one immediate threat to Konoha and improved public confidence in Tsunade's leadership. 237
Administration and military
- Hokage Tower — Central site for leadership meetings, emergency mobilization, and the coordination of village affairs. 2 85
- Council of Elders — Included Danzō, Homura, and Koharu during Hiruzen's administration; the council participated in reconstruction, policy, and crisis management. 2 3
- Jōnin Council — Approved the Uchiha relocation proposal and remained an important source of political recognition for the Hokage. 3 85
- Anbu — Conducted intelligence gathering, security operations, and surveillance of the Uchiha district. 3 29
- Root — Danzō's covert force. Its actions against the Uchiha aggravated the clan-village divide; it was destroyed during Feng's raid. 3 16 196
- Uchiha Police Force — Retained official authorization under a Second Hokage decree even as Konoha's leadership tolerated its increasingly disruptive enforcement actions. 77
Relations
- Uchiha Clan — A founding clan subjected to suspicion, relocation, surveillance, and eventual destruction of its Konoha-based members. Konoha later formed an alliance with Feng's Uchiha-led Land of Whirlpools. 3 110 237
- Land of Fire Daimyō — Konoha's political superior and source of subsidies. Relations deteriorated after the southern peninsula was lost to the Uchiha. 200 229
- Tea Country — Konoha's investigation of Tea Country nearly triggered a broader coalition crisis; the dispute ended through an apology and compensation. 28 31
- Sunagakure and Otogakure — Participated in the Konoha Crush, with Sunagakure providing invading forces and Orochimaru's Otogakure directing the central attack. 190 191
- Kumogakure and Iwagakure — Viewed Konoha's weakness as an opportunity. Their plans were disrupted by Konoha's alliance with the Land of Whirlpools. 215 237
