Background
Exile, loss, and the return of dragons
Daenerys was the last surviving heir of her immediate Targaryen family after the deaths of her son, Khal Drogo, and Viserys. Overwhelmed by grief, she entered her husband’s funeral pyre; the Red Comet and a blood-and-fire sacrifice heralded the return of dragons. By the time news reached Westeros, she had hatched three dragons. 192 214
In Qarth, Daenerys hoped to obtain ships and soldiers to reclaim the Iron Throne, but the city’s elites treated her as spectacle rather than a queen. Her visit to the House of the Undying exposed her to illusions of her childhood, her family, and Targaryen prophecy. She resisted the Undying’s lure and burned them with Drogon’s fire, then saw a vision of a black-haired man beside a white dragon—whom she later began calling “Caesar.” 262 285
Alliance with Caesar
After surviving an assassination attempt in Qarth, Daenerys accepted Barristan Selmy’s service and chose to seek out Caesar in Astapor despite warnings that he also sought the Iron Throne. 315
She met Caesar at sea, where his enormous white dragon, Cleopatra, dwarfed Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion. Daenerys initially viewed Caesar as her last living kin and was drawn to his strength, though his political ambitions soon became a source of conflict between them. 321 329
Liberation of Slaver's Bay
In Astapor, Daenerys agreed to exchange Drogon for all 8,600 Unsullied. Once the transaction was complete, she commanded the Unsullied to kill their former masters, freed them from slavery, and ordered them to break every chain in the city. 325
Determined to continue liberation despite Caesar’s objections, Daenerys marched on Yunkai. After the Unsullied won the battle, freed slaves greeted her as “Mhysa,” cementing her identity as a liberator and maternal figure. 333 338
Her conquest of Meereen proved far more difficult. The Sons of the Harpy undermined her rule, former slaveholders returned to power in Yunkai after her departure, and Daenerys gradually accepted that killing nobles alone could not build a stable society. She initially considered marrying Hizdahr zo Loraq for peace, but his wedding-day assassination plot was exposed. 347 348 353 354
Dragonrider and Queen Consort
When Drogon returned during Hizdahr’s attempted coup, Daenerys overcame her fear, commanded him to submit, removed a spear from his back, and became his rider. 354
After the upheaval in Meereen, Daenerys accepted Caesar’s gradual plan to dismantle slavery rather than abolish it through immediate force alone. She married Samwell Caesar in the Temple of Graces, joining her Targaryen claim and dragons to his expanding power. 352 364
Daenerys later sailed to Westeros with Samwell, the Unsullied, and her dragons. At Storm’s End, Margaery Tyrell welcomed her as family, easing Daenerys’s loneliness in the land she had long dreamed of reclaiming. 369 395
Queen Mother and final years
Daenerys entered King’s Landing with Margaery after Samwell’s victory and remained at his side when he claimed the Iron Throne. 478 479
She gave birth to a daughter, Rhaenys, and later had two sons, Aegon and Aemon. Her descendants became the core of the “Blacks” during the later dynastic conflict between the branches of House Caesar. 508 546 548
In old age, Daenerys withdrew to Dragonstone as her children’s factional struggle escalated. When Samwell returned after decades away, she revisited Highgarden and Meereen with him before asking to go home. She died peacefully in his arms while Drogon carried them above Dragonstone, where she had been born. 548
Appearance
Daenerys is a strikingly beautiful woman with the distinctive coloring of House Targaryen: silver-gold hair and violet eyes. 321 354
- Often wears silk gowns in vivid colors, including turquoise, violet, and purple. 315 329
- Her silver hair and violet eyes are repeatedly associated with her identity as a “true dragon.” 321 358
- During the Meereen coup, she discards her restrictive tokar while riding Drogon above the burning Temple of Graces. 354
Personality
Daenerys is compassionate, proud, and deeply driven by the suffering she witnessed in exile and in slave cities. Her liberation of the Unsullied and her refusal to regard dragons as property reflect her belief that freedom cannot be bought or owned. 325
She initially approaches rule with idealism and a desire to free every slave in Slaver’s Bay. The unrest in Meereen forces her to confront the limits of simple solutions; she eventually accepts that ending entrenched systems requires patience, replacement institutions, and political compromise. 347 349 352
Her confidence is often undermined by fear of inheriting the madness associated with her father, Aerys II. Barristan’s encouragement and her own victories help her reaffirm her determination to become a great queen rather than another tragic Targaryen ruler. 332 333
