Sacred Capital.
Heaven Oversight Bureau.
At the top of the Heaven-Watching Tower.
A little girl who looked no more than seven or eight lay sprawled like a starfish across a broad cloud bed, fast asleep without a care in the world. No one could tell what rare heavenly material the bed had been woven from; it was as soft as down.
Her tiny body sank deep into it. A guileless, silly smile flickered across her face now and then, and a glistening thread of drool hung from her lips. The bed did not rest on the floor. It floated in midair like a cloud, drifting aimlessly around the tower's summit.
On closer inspection, whenever the bed moved, faint star charts shimmered in and out of the void alongside it.
The tower's summit was utterly still. Only the little girl's faint, steady breathing echoed through the air.
Suddenly, a slender, snow-white dog leaped out of thin air.
It landed lightly on the bed beside the little girl and eagerly licked the drool from the corner of her mouth.
"Watermelon, stop it. Let me sleep a little longer!"
The little girl mumbled indistinctly. Eyes shut, she waved a chubby hand, trying to push away the dog's relentless tongue.
But her eyelids seemed glued together. She could not open them no matter what.
Just then, a white-haired, white-bearded old man stumbled into the tower's summit, his steps unsteady and his face stricken with panic.
"Grandmaster Aunt! Something terrible has happened!"
His cry was so wretched that it sounded as though heaven and earth had come crashing down.
The little girl, still half lost in sleep, snapped her eyes open. She shoved away the fawning Watermelon and sprang from the cloud bed. In midair, she drove a foot squarely into the old man's face.
