Background / History
Li Changshou is a disciple of Lesser Qiong Peak in the Du Xian Sect and a member of the Human Teachings lineage. He values that lineage as a source of protection in a dangerous Primordial World, repeatedly returning to Lesser Qiong Peak after external affairs and treating the mountain as his safest refuge 39 58 60.
His guiding principle is stability. He avoids unnecessary karmic entanglements, prepares escape routes and layered defenses, and prefers cultivating quietly over attracting attention. Even when the South Sea worshippers begin venerating him as a Sea God, he chooses not to destroy the statues personally because doing so could cause further unforeseen consequences 60 118 130.
His growing influence begins with the Sea God Cult and the Dragon Clan. He ultimately guides the Four Seas Dragon Clan into submission to the Heavenly Court, earning a vast quantity of merit and consolidating his standing as a Heavenly Court official 261 333. His accomplishments as Water God include managing water affairs, pacifying the Four Seas, stabilizing the Underworld, protecting reincarnation, and suppressing demonic threats 534.
Li Changshou later takes on a wider role in the affairs of the Three Realms. He creates alliances, develops the Heavenly Court’s influence, mentors younger figures, and plans around the Great Cataclysm while attempting to limit casualties and preserve order 457 629. Though he formally retires, he remains involved in Heavenly Court and mortal political affairs through his Paper Daoists 662.
Personality
Li Changshou is exceptionally prudent, analytical, and risk-averse. He treats even minor variables as possible threats, favors contingency plans, and distrusts impulsive action. His personal creed is effectively “stability through stability,” distinct from the Human Teachings’ principle of non-action 143 238.
His caution does not make him passive. When an opponent threatens the Heavenly Court, his allies, or his plans, he can act with startling decisiveness. He swiftly neutralizes a Dragon Clan elder, captures Ju Liusun in a single move, and destroys Guang Chengzi’s Fan Tian Seal when necessary 333 619 735.
Despite his calculating nature, Li Changshou has a conscience. He protects Lesser Qiong Peak, worries over his master’s well-being, helps spirits reincarnate, and avoids needlessly disappointing Ling’e. He also considers ethical consequences when building forces for the Heavenly Court 193 197 261 476.
