Background / History
Lin Tingwan is Lin Jianxia's younger twin sister. Their identical appearance enabled Jianxia to attend Licheng No. 3 High School under Tingwan's identity when Tingwan could not comfortably attend herself. Jianxia had transferred from Lin No. 5 High School and took leave to protect and care for Tingwan, whose student registration remained at the other school. 26
At school, Tingwan was publicly believed to have congenital mutism and poor hearing. In reality, her hearing is normal and her silence is psychological; the supposed hearing difficulty was an excuse so others would stop approaching her when she did not respond. 26
Tingwan strongly resists school and finds interaction with classmates burdensome. Outside places where she feels safe, she withdraws almost completely, sometimes failing to acknowledge even Jianxia; after school, she needs time alone in her room before she can recover. 26 27 47
During Jiang Yubai's first rent-collection visit, Jianxia was posing as Tingwan. The real Tingwan appeared at the apartment door, prompting Jianxia to immediately tell her not to come out. 1 After Jianxia revealed the identity switch, Tingwan began attending school herself. She spent her first days there silently reading, taking notes, and avoiding all communication. 26 27 30
Appearance
Lin Tingwan is an exceptionally beautiful girl whose delicate features are nearly identical to Jianxia's. Her appearance is a major reason classmates remain fascinated by her despite her distant manner. 1 2 6
- Delicate, painted-looking brows and eyes; fine, straight nose; small, full lips. 1
- Clear, almond-shaped or glass-like eyes; her eyes are described as amber-like at home. 1 13 27
- Long hair, commonly worn in a high ponytail. 1 6
- Wears the complete sky-blue school uniform properly every day, including a buttoned collar, zipped jacket, and neatly pressed trousers. 5
- Keeps a panda plushie in her room and frequently holds it when withdrawn or resting. 32 44
Personality
Tingwan is quiet, observant, and emotionally sincere. At home, she shows concern for Jianxia's well-being, asks whether her sister has eaten, divides snacks into portions, and studies with her through written exchanges. 10 13 17
Her withdrawal is situational rather than a lack of intelligence or feeling. She can be academically stronger than Jianxia, but she has little social experience and an extremely limited understanding of interpersonal boundaries. 33 40 After reading about hugs in one of Jianxia's romance novels, she simply tried it herself because the description made it seem pleasant. 33
Tingwan gradually becomes more proactive around Jiang Yubai. She describes him as a good person and as someone who feels “comfortable,” then agrees to speak with him every day. 22 40
Communication and Social Condition
Psychological Mutism
Tingwan's mutism is psychological rather than congenital, and she has no physical hearing impairment. Her silence is tied to discomfort with school and social contact. 26
- At school, she creates a “fortress” around herself by ignoring teachers, classmates, and even direct attempts to communicate. 27
- She generally communicates through a spiral notebook, particularly at home or with people she trusts. 10 32
- A psychologist advised that going out, communicating, and making friends could help prevent her condition from worsening. 40 43
- She is able to speak or interact more naturally in spaces she considers safe, including her room and eventually Jiang Yubai's apartment. 32 46 47
Academic Ability
Tingwan follows class schedules, takes out the appropriate books, copies required notes, and keeps up with schoolwork even while refusing to engage socially. 27
- Jianxia states that Tingwan has no intellectual difficulties.
- Tingwan is said to be slightly stronger academically than her sister. 40
Items
- Spiral notebook — Her primary means of expressing questions, apologies, observations, and requests. 10 32 40
- Panda plushie — A familiar comfort item kept in her room and held during periods of withdrawal. 32 44
Relationships
- Lin Jianxia — Older twin sister, caretaker, and closest confidante. Jianxia attends school in Tingwan's place, provides food and lessons, and actively seeks ways to help her recover socially. 10 26 43
- Jiang Yubai — Classmate and neighbor who becomes the first person outside Jianxia with whom Tingwan consistently opens up. She calls him a good person, finds him comfortable, initiates hugs, and agrees to daily conversations with him. 22 32 40 45
- Zhang Shufang — Homeroom teacher. Like the other students, she initially accepts the explanation that Tingwan has hearing difficulties and keeps her seat near the front of the classroom. 6
Story Role / Major Arcs
Identity Switch and School Isolation
Jianxia's impersonation of Tingwan creates Jiang Yubai's initial confusion, since he believes the famously mute classmate has suddenly spoken. The truth is disclosed later: Tingwan's identity had been used so Jianxia could attend school and protect her from a setting Tingwan fears. 1 26
Return to School
When Tingwan begins attending class herself, she refuses Jiang Yubai's notes and snacks and spends days without communicating with anyone. Rumors linking her to Jiang Yubai and the disruption caused by his confrontation with Dong Chengze further worsen her discomfort. 27 28 30
Opening Up to Jiang Yubai
At home, Tingwan responds warmly to Jiang Yubai, greeting him by notebook and unexpectedly hugging him after reading about embraces in a novel. Her willingness to interact convinces Jianxia that he may be able to help her recover. 32 33 40
Daily Social Interaction
Jianxia asks Jiang Yubai to speak with Tingwan every day. Tingwan begins communicating more, requesting hugs, conversing with him, and agreeing to leave her room to eat at his apartment next door—a significant break from her prior isolation. 43 44 45 46
