Background / History

Li Yang was initially seated beside Jiang Yubai. He regularly relied on Jiang's math papers to complete his own homework, calling Jiang “Brother Jiang” and jokingly declaring him his “second father.” Despite claiming loyalty, he copied from several of Jiang's papers because he believed more of Jiang's answers were correct 5.

When Jiang was moved to the front row beside Lin Tingwan, Li Yang theatrically wished his former deskmate well “on the front lines,” lamenting that he would be left behind 6. He later continued eating with Jiang and acted as an informal source of school gossip, especially concerning rumors about Jiang's supposed relationships 11 12 23.

After Jiang's move made copying from him inconvenient, Li Yang began borrowing work from Wang Jianglong instead. Jiang caught him using the school’s study-group arrangement as a “copy-each-other's-work group” 48.
