Background and history
Song Shan was Ethan Vale's closest friend during their student years and, in Ethan Vale's recollection, the only person who sincerely befriended him. He reacted with genuine alarm when Ethan Vale rejected Yogame's lucrative job offer, believing that the opportunity could have changed his friend's life. Nevertheless, he chose to support Ethan Vale's plan to establish a studio and began by creating weapon models from Ethan Vale's reference materials. 6 20
During Sprout's early development period, Song Shan contributed roughly one-fifth of Dead Cells' content. The workload exhausted him, but studying Ethan Vale's completed design helped him understand how its permanent-upgrade system encouraged players to keep progressing. 8
As Sprout grew, Song Shan worked with every project team and reviewed each game's design milestones on Ethan Vale's behalf. Though his name appeared after Black Star's on many projects, he remained largely unknown to outsiders and felt he still had not caught up to Ethan Vale's ability. 246 352
Ethan Vale eventually entrusted him with leading Terraria, giving him only its basic genre and goals rather than a completed design proposal. Song Shan initially felt unworthy of leading such a project, but embraced the opportunity to build a world through his own imagination. Terraria became the first game credited with Song Shan's name ahead of Ethan Vale's. 246 247 352
Personality
Song Shan is excitable, candid, and deeply loyal to Ethan Vale. He readily voices his doubts—whether about tight production schedules, unconventional design decisions, or Ethan Vale making a romance game without having experienced love—but supports his friend even when he does not fully understand the plan. 20 87 161 162
He is initially insecure about his own abilities and uncomfortable with receiving recognition he feels he has not earned. Once granted creative autonomy, however, he becomes ambitious and confident in his imagination, particularly when designing open worlds. 246 247
Song Shan also has a playful, teasing sense of humor. He eagerly anticipated Ethan Vale's Qixi Festival game as another trial for couples, jokingly accused Ethan Vale of being an assassin sent to torment players, and often banters with him in the office. 87 271
