Background
Origins and Recruitment
Chu Fan arrived at the Huo Family Martial Arts School with his mother after fleeing from elsewhere. The pair depended on one another and lived in severe poverty; Chu Fan sometimes had only one meal a day, performing chores for wealthier disciples to earn extra food. Wu Tiezhu regularly shared one of his cornbread buns with him. 10
Huo Shan's examination revealed that Chu Fan possessed a rare second-grade bone structure. Recognizing his potential, Huo Shan immediately accepted him as a formal disciple and began personally teaching him fist techniques. 11
Rapid Rise
Chu Fan reached Bright Force in under two months, receiving a meat subsidy and special instruction from Huo Shan. His improvement transformed his circumstances: he exchanged his worn clothing for fine garments, gained the admiration of new disciples, and became increasingly distant from Wu Tiezhu and his former apprentice peers. 12
He advanced to Dark Force barely half a year after joining the school. Huo Shan formally made him his final disciple, intending for Chu Fan to inherit the martial school's legacy. The Wang and Zhou families supported him because of his talent, while later connections with the Zhu Family and the county magistrate brought further resources and an inner-city residence. 16 21 41
Chu Fan's reputation peaked after he killed the wanted Dark Force criminal Flying Centipede, Sha Tongtian. The martial school displayed a plaque reading “Famed Master, Outstanding Disciple” in celebration of his achievement. 33
Martial Examination and Injury
Although regarded as the Huo Family Martial Arts School's best hope of placing in the county martial examination, Chu Fan failed the archery event, hitting only four of ten bullseyes. 46
He reached the top thirty-two, but his match against Han Dong ended disastrously. Relying on intelligence about Seven Killings Fist that proved misleading, Chu Fan exposed an opening and was struck in the dantian. The injury prevented a full recovery and made the use of inner strength dangerous. 54 57 58 61
Before Zhao Feng's bout with Zhu Mingshou, Chu Fan denied knowing details of the Zhu Family fighter's Iron Sand Palm despite his close ties to the Zhu Family. Zhu Mingshou later revealed that Chu Fan had underestimated Zhao Feng's inner strength, leading Zhao Feng to suspect that Chu Fan had leaked information about him. 54 56
Second Fall and Expulsion
After returning to the martial school, Chu Fan remained proud and resentful despite losing his former status. He later provoked the Han Family, injured two of its members, and was again defeated by Han Dong. The encounter worsened his dantian injury; Hu Physician judged that he would likely be unable to fight again. 73 75 76
Desperate for secret medicine, Chu Fan accused Huo Shan of caring only about reputation, insulted Huo Shan's wife, and blamed Zhao Feng for deliberately humiliating him. Huo Shan expelled him from the martial school despite his mother's pleas. 81 82
Xu Commandant subsequently detained Chu Fan alongside former Zhu Family retainers for interrogation. When Zhao Feng later asked about him, prison officials discovered that Chu Fan had been removed from custody without authorization. 82 84
Personality
Chu Fan was initially quiet, self-abasing, and grateful toward those who helped him during his impoverished apprenticeship. His sudden rise in status changed him markedly: he became proud, aloof, and uncomfortable around people who had known him while he was poor. 10 12 13
He was highly conscious of talent, status, and reputation. He repeatedly dismissed Zhao Feng as limited by poor innate aptitude, resented Zhao Feng's breakthroughs, and grew visibly jealous when Huo Shan or Huo Yao praised Zhao Feng. 12 13 32 54
His confidence also made him impulsive. He neglected training for banquets and drinking, publicly fell out with Wang Yu and Zhou Xue, and repeatedly clashed with the Han Family despite Huo Shan's warnings. 24 41 76
After his dantian injuries, Chu Fan became isolated, despairing, paranoid, and increasingly volatile. Rather than accepting responsibility for his actions, he accused his master and fellow disciples of abandoning or exploiting him. 66 73 81
