Shi Jian was Mount Mao's Eldest Senior Brother and later its sect leader. Unlike Uncle Nine, who inherited ritual implements from their master, Shi Jian attained leadership through his own strength. Mount Mao's loose structure meant that even as sect leader, he did not hold absolute authority over every disciple or independent hall. 185 187

Before his ascension, Shi Jian cultivated Mount Mao Stillness Practice to the realm of Great Stillness and was recognized as the Mount Mao generation's foremost practitioner. His Thunder Arts were formidable, but his fierce, domineering temperament left Uncle Nine uncertain whether calling on him would resolve or worsen a crisis. 185 186

Escaped Ghost Crisis

Shi Jian answers Uncle Nine's request for assistance after the Ghost Gate incident releases vicious ghosts. He takes command of the Mount Mao Daoists, assigns roles for the Primordial Eight Trigrams Formation, and displays the authority expected of the sect leader. 185 187

His first encounter with Huang Bai becomes an implicit contest of Thunder Arts. Shi Jian's Lightning Thunder Fist is more violent and destructive, while Huang Bai's Five-Element Thunder Method is controlled and precise. Shi Jian recognizes Huang Bai as an equal but becomes resentful of his superior public status and comparable cultivation. 187 188

Shi Shaojian's Exposure and the Public Duel

After Huang Bai captures Shi Shaojian for using evil arts to harm a woman, Shi Jian challenges Huang Bai to a public duel witnessed by heaven, earth, humanity, ghosts, and gods. The winner would gain the presidencies of the National Daoist Association and China Prayer Association; Shi Jian also stakes his Daoist arts and position as Mount Mao sect leader. 189

Shi Jian loses the first two trials—mountain of blades and sea of fire—then enters the final battle obsessed with killing Huang Bai. He invokes power from the Mount Mao patriarchs, combining the Wooden Stake Technique with overwhelming lightning attacks. 191

Human Tribulation and Ascension

Huang Bai manifests as a Feathered Person and severs Shi Jian's connection to the Mount Mao patriarchs. Deprived of borrowed power, Shi Jian is defeated by Huang Bai's Five Thunders and finally recognizes that he had long fallen into demonic obsession. 192

Rather than killing him, Huang Bai allows Shi Jian to awaken. Shi Jian subsequently orders Shi Shaojian's reincarnation, accepts responsibility for his failures as a father, and passes the Bì Wind and lightning tribulations to attain Daylight Ascension. 192

Aid Against Shendu

Thirty years after his ascension, Shi Jian remains in Mount Mao's Yin-Earth Dharma Realm and longs to revisit the mortal world, though his true Dharma Form makes a normal descent dangerous. 213

Huang Bai later summons him through Aid-Seeking Incense to help defeat Shendu. Shi Jian uses the Primordial Thunder Arts Eight Trigrams Formation to restrain the demon at the cost of his temporary life, buying Huang Bai the time required for refinement. 213 214
