Background / History
Chloe is a descendant of the alchemist Nicolas Flamel. She never attended a magic school and has no wand, but identifies herself as a wizard. Her inability to control her magic led to frequent, involuntary temporal displacements; she was sent to Teral Monastery for six or seven years, where she came to believe her parents feared her more than they loved her. 209 211 236
Her uncontrolled magic initially moved her back and forth within a single day, but became more frequent and severe approximately a year before she met Hoffa Bach. Chloe later linked this escalation to the Half-Human King’s release and her connection to the Nightmare God. 371
Delphina introduces Chloe to Hoffa in Paris, intending for him to escort her back to London. At first, Hoffa suspects her of stealing his Magic Amplification Gloves, while Chloe resents his accusations and refusal to trust her. 208 209
After a magical restorative potion triggers a violent magical reaction, Chloe accidentally sends herself and Hoffa two days into the past. The pair must evade German dark wizards, recover sufficient magic, and return to their proper time. 209 210 215
During their journey toward Britain, Chloe repeatedly chooses the welfare of refugees and other civilians over her own safety. Her insistence that Hoffa not kill anyone becomes a standing condition of their partnership. 214 215 219 220
Chloe is later afflicted with the tracking curse Eye Demon’s Touch, which manifests as dark magic-infused eyes on her back. After Mary’s death, Chloe attempts to use her ability to save her, but is displaced to Berlin in 1922 and eventually becomes trapped in a nightmare shaped by the Teral Monastery massacre. 222 223 225 227 235
After escaping the nightmare, Chloe is repeatedly targeted and imprisoned by Müller Mans and other factions seeking to exploit her temporal power. Mans eventually drains her blood and transfers part of her power into himself, allowing him to create short time loops. 243 248 259
Chloe returns to London with Nicolas Flamel, only to be isolated in an underground Ministry of Magic room. Minister Drases/Fatir later attempts to use her abilities through the Arrow of Time project to save his deceased daughter. 267 273 277
In the abstract world, Chloe reveals that she and the Nightmare God are opposing counterparts: its presence implies hers, and hers implies its. She later helps Hoffa seal the Nightmare God and discusses their hope of opening a shop and church together. 371 417
Appearance
Chloe commonly conceals her true appearance beneath deliberately ugly makeup and a transfigured scarred face, allowing her to pass as an unremarkable nun while avoiding recognition. 209 213
- Young woman with wine-red hair and pale violet eyes. 213
- Naturally pale complexion and lightly colored lips; her appearance is described as unhealthy rather than glamorous. 213
- Her eyes turn silver-white or pure white when her magic runs rampant. 215 259
- Usually wears black-and-white nun’s robes and a nun’s cap. 208 266
- Creates freckles and scars with makeup, then uses magic to make the false scars appear lifelike. 213
- Was dressed in red robes while held captive in the underground vampire kingdom. 246
Personality
Chloe is compassionate, idealistic, and deeply committed to her religious principles. She helps strangers even when frightened and displaced, gives food and care to refugees, and refuses to accept killing as a necessary solution. 214 217 218 227
Her idealism frequently clashes with Hoffa’s survival-focused pragmatism. Chloe is willing to confront him when he threatens others, yet she also recognizes his efforts to protect her and gradually comes to trust him. 215 220 239
Although initially timid and prone to panic under pressure, Chloe grows notably calmer through repeated captivity, nightmares, and confrontation with Mans. Rather than surrendering her principles, she begins answering threats with composure, defiance, and even sympathy for her captor. 235 248 249 263
Abilities & Skills
Time Manipulation
Chloe’s primary power causes movement through time and, in some circumstances, across space. Her magic is volatile and can activate uncontrollably.
- During magical outbursts, she randomly moves along her own timeline and returns naturally once her magic recovers. 211
- Accidentally sends herself and Hoffa two days into the past during a magical rampage. 210
- Requires sufficient magic to deliberately return through time; at one point, half an ordinary adult wizard’s magical capacity is insufficient. 215
- Temporal travel does not inherently change location: she and Hoffa would reappear where they departed unless they moved first. 215
- Overuse leaves her severely weakened, unable to see, nauseated, or barely able to stand. 211 215
- Her attempt to save Mary displaces her to Berlin in 1922 rather than the intended location. 225 227
Temporal Observation
With enough magical power, Chloe can project her consciousness and observe distant locations and events across time.
- Can perceive events occurring at different points in time when supplied with enough magic. 246
- Her projected awareness observes people and locations beyond her prison, including Hoffa outside the vampire-held castle. 246
- She cannot reliably see or control her own fate, despite others treating her as an oracle. 248
Connection to the Nightmare God
Chloe possesses a metaphysical connection to the Nightmare God and the abstract world.
- She identifies herself as the Nightmare God’s opposite: where one exists, so does the other. 371
- Her time-related magic can be absorbed and converted into dream power by the entity sustaining the nightmare world. 239
- She can appear and communicate with Hoffa within the abstract world. 371 372
- Her resemblance to the Nightmare God includes the white-eyed state seen during magical rampages. 371
Disguise Magic
Chloe is highly practiced in disguising herself.
- Uses cosmetics to alter her features with freckles and artificial scars. 213
- Enhances the disguise through Transfiguration, making the scars appear genuine. 209 213
- Uses the disguise to avoid recognition by German wizards. 213
Equipment / Items
- Nun’s robes and cap — Chloe’s usual clothing and religious attire. 208 266
- Crystal necklace — A hexagonal necklace made by Nicolas Flamel; he instructs Chloe never to let anyone see it. 273
- Soul stone — Later used by Nicolas Flamel while allowing Hoffa to encounter Chloe in the abstract world. 371
- Pistol — Hoffa arms Chloe with one while they are trapped at sea. 223
Relationships
- Hoffa Bach — Initially her accuser and reluctant escort; becomes Chloe’s protector, companion, and trusted partner through their temporal and nightmare ordeals. 209 215 239 263
- Nicolas Flamel — Chloe’s ancestor and guardian. He seeks a way to control her unstable magic, but also isolates her at the Ministry and withholds important information. 209 236 267 273
- Delphina — Ministry employee who introduces Chloe to Hoffa and arranges for her return to London. 208 209
- Müller Mans — Persistent captor who seeks Chloe’s knowledge of the future and ultimately steals her temporal power through blood extraction. 209 248 259
- Mary Dean — A widow whom Chloe comforts and invites to Britain; Chloe risks her own safety attempting to save her after her death. 220 225
- Aldo Berkeley — Initially one of the wizards pursuing her; later protects Chloe in the nightmare and sacrifices himself to help her escape. 237 238
- Vivy — A companion at Teral Monastery toward whom Chloe shows open tenderness. 236
