Background
Kazutoyo was originally a modern man named Wang Jin. After pressing a reward button to support a webnovel author, he awakens in the body of Yamauchi Kazutoyo on the battlefield at Ukino during the late Eiroku 1 era (1558). His limited knowledge of Sengoku history lets him recognize Oda Nobunaga's eventual rise, but he must rapidly adapt to the immediate danger surrounding the defeated Iwakura Oda clan. 2
He is the legitimate son of Yamauchi Moritoyo, a former karō of the Iwakura Oda clan. Although the Yamauchi family retains its prestigious name, it has already lost its fiefs and most of its retainers by the Battle of Ukino. 2 6
As Iwakura Castle faces collapse, Moritoyo orders Kazutoyo, his mother, and his siblings to escape. He entrusts Goto Joki—his longtime right-hand man—with Kazutoyo's protection and tells his son to treat Goto as a father. 6 7
Moritoyo remains behind out of loyalty and later commits seppuku after Iwakura Castle surrenders. Kazutoyo takes responsibility for the surviving household, which includes his mother Hoshūni, his siblings Kichisuke, Komai, and Kōgō, and the retainers Goto Joki and Sobue Kan'emon. 12
The family initially finds refuge at Horenji Temple, where Kazutoyo was born, before moving to Matsukura Castle under the protection of his uncle, Maeno Tokiyuki. Reduced to farming five tan of paddy fields, Kazutoyo nevertheless resolves to restore the Yamauchi name through his own ability. 12 13 14
Personality
Kazutoyo is intensely survival-driven. During the escape from Iwakura, he abandons Oda Nobukata's group when he judges that remaining near the fleeing lord will endanger his family. He openly declares that merely surviving is insufficient: he wants the power to control his own life and death. 10
He combines patience, political awareness, and deception. Kazutoyo studies local power structures before acting, adopts identities suited to each situation, and uses the prestige of Jodo Shinshu as protection while building influence on the Kiso River. 16 29 37
He is also calculating in his treatment of allies and enemies. He can order ruthless reprisals against those who threaten his household, but he shares rewards generously with followers and partners to secure their loyalty. 24 48
Despite his ambition, Kazutoyo values family obligations and personal bonds. He protects Goto Joki's family during their flight, sends his mother as a hostage to secure an alliance, and helps Maeda Toshiie's wife during childbirth. 10 43 49

Kazutoyo awakens at the Battle of Ukino, where the Iwakura Oda clan is defeated by Oda Nobunaga's forces. He escapes the battlefield with Moritoyo and loses much of the Yamauchi family's remaining military support. 2
When Iwakura Castle falls, Kazutoyo leads his mother and siblings away while Moritoyo stays behind. During their flight, Kazutoyo misdirects Oda's pursuers toward Oda Nobukata, fights beside Horio Yoshiharu, and becomes his sworn brother. 7 10
Inagi Estate Stewardship

Formation of the Ogawa Band
Rather than immediately entering Oda Nobunaga's service as a low-ranking ashigaru, Kazutoyo decides to establish his own reputation first. He recruits Hachisuka Masakatsu and deepens cooperation with Horio Yoshiharu, Sobue Kan'emon, and Kichibē. 21 22 27
He adopts the identity of Ogawa Saburo and seeks Jodo Shinshu patronage, offering his band as a means to expand the sect's influence along the Kiso River. 29 36 37
Kiso River Expansion
With boats, Jodo Shinshu's banner, and local partners, Kazutoyo establishes a toll station on the Kiso River. The Ogawa Band quickly begins collecting money and goods from merchant ships. 28 40
Kazutoyo broadens the operation through agreements with Matsubara Naiku and Osawa Masatsugu. The alliance gains docking rights and warehouse access, then moves toward construction of a castle on Igi Mountain to blockade Inuyama Castle. 41 43
When the three-month test set by Shimotsuma Yorinari ends, Kazutoyo proves his value through toll accounts and the Hida lumber trade. Yorinari agrees to invest in his plan to seize wider trade across the Kiso Three Rivers. 48
