Background

Stark was captured in Afghanistan and severely injured by shrapnel in his chest. Dr. Yinsen kept him alive with a car battery, a solution Stark found humiliating despite his gratitude. Alvin's message promising a rescue reignited Stark's pride; he agreed to build a Jericho missile as cover while preparing his own escape. 53

During more than a month of captivity, Stark replaced the car battery with a compact fusion reactor and, with Yinsen's assistance, assembled a crude but formidable exoskeleton from available materials. Alvin and Yinsen later rescued him. 53 56

The experience changed his view of Stark Industries. After seeing terrorists use his weapons, Stark resolved to shut down the company's weapons division. He also agreed to construct a modern teaching building for Alvin's school in exchange for secrecy concerning his chest reactor. 56
