History
Mythic-era order
The Netherworld originally governed the boundary between yin and yang. Ordinary cultivators could normally enter only after death, when Black and White Impermanence escorted their souls through Ghost Gate Pass and onto the Yellow Springs Road. 140
Its hierarchy was rigid and comprehensive. Mount Luofeng stood as the sacred mountain suppressing the Netherworld, with the Great Emperor above and the Six Heavens Palace governing the ten directions. Below them were offices including the Five Ghost Emperors, Ten Yama Kings, Four Great Judges, Ten Great Yin Commanders, city lords, ghost gods, and lesser Yin officials. 171 190
The Eighteen Levels of Hell were a central component of this system: dead sinners endured infernal punishments until their karmic burdens were cleansed sufficiently for reincarnation. 104
Collapse and loss of mythology
By the Lost Mythic Age, the Netherworld had collapsed, its gods had disappeared, and much of its mythology had been lost. The Federation retains only fragmentary knowledge of its former deities; even several of the Ten Yama Kings have no surviving evidence beyond incomplete names. 76 140
The central region is particularly distorted. When Zhou Yao crosses the Netherworld Firmament, he sees the Central Nether Domain as a shattered starfield filled with ruins and violent Netherworld aura, while the ghost gods accompanying him perceive a prosperous, intact capital. 192
Later events suggest that the erasure extends across time. In a Mythic Echo set during the ancient era, even a ghost deity guarding the core hall does not recognize the Ten Yama Kings, Five Directional Ghost Emperors, or Book of Life and Death. 268
Structure and Governance
| Rank / Institution | Role |
|---|---|
| Mount Luofeng and the Six Heavens Palace | Supreme sacred center associated with the Emperor and governance over the ten directions of the Netherworld. 190 |
| Five Ghost Emperors | High-ranking rulers traditionally second only to the Fengdu Great Emperor. 268 |
| Ten Yama Kings | Major rulers of the underworld’s halls and judges of the dead. 76 268 |
| Four Great Judges | Senior Netherworld officials beneath the highest sovereign authorities. 171 207 |
| Ten Yin Commanders / Underworld Marshals | Orthodox military and soul-management officials; the Nine Nether Guards are commanded by the ten Yin Marshals. 171 175 |
| City Lords and Ghost Gods | Regional rulers beneath the central order, normally barred from entering the Central Nether Domain without an imperial summons. 192 |
| Yin Commander | An office that moves between yin and yang and may seize souls; Xie An’s appointment marks the first renewed transfer of Netherworld authority in ages. 205 |
The Netherworld’s offices were traditionally fixed: every divine position was occupied, leaving little possibility for Orthodox Gods to advance unless a superior office changed hands. 171
Functions and Laws
Life, death, and reincarnation
- Book of Life and Death — Records every living being’s true name and karmic threads; Zhou Yao’s Name Beyond Life and Death prevents the Book’s projection from recording him. 196
- Eighteen Levels of Hell — Punishes and purifies sinful dead before their reincarnation. 104
- Bridge of Helplessness — A supreme Netherworld treasure able to deliver dead souls and cleanse their sins; it survives outside the erased historical remnants. 213 215
- Yellow Springs River — Part of the restored soul-guidance process within Zhou Yao’s developing Netherworld framework. 263
- Palace of Absolute Yin — In the Mythic Echo, the institution said to determine mortal lifespans after the Book of Life and Death’s absence. 268
Judgment and punishment
The Sin Mirror reflects the past deeds of living beings, records the sins of departed souls, and provides the legal basis for Netherworld punishment. It is a supreme treasure corresponding to the Palace of Tianzhao’s Sinful Aura. 209
The Netherworld Law enforces obedience to hierarchy. When invoked through ghost-god origins, it manifests as an overwhelming authority capable of executing those who defy their superiors. 188
Authority over restrictions
In the Netherworld, status and authority outweigh raw strength. A true Yama Lord or Ghost Emperor holding Netherworld source can activate restrictions such as the Divine Might Restriction, while lesser officials cannot normally access them. 207
Xie An’s Yin Commander authority can communicate with residual Netherworld order, causing lethal restrictions in the First Hall to pause or move aside. 205
Key Locations
- Mount Luofeng — Sacred mountain that suppresses the Netherworld; the Six Heavens Palace stands at its summit. 183 190
- Central Nether Domain — Core region beyond the Netherworld Firmament, traditionally containing the cities of the Five Ghost Emperors and the Ten Halls of Yama. 192
- Netherworld Firmament — Barrier separating the border regions from the Central Nether Domain. 192
- First Hall — An ancient central hall associated with Yama authority, the Sin Mirror, powerful restrictions, and the Ghost Assistant’s interference. 200 205 207
- Eighteen Levels of Hell — Infernal realm for the punishment and cleansing of sinners. 104
- Yinluo City — A regional ghost city ruled by the Yinluo City Lord. 169 171
- Mount Luofeng Daoist Arena — Zhou Yao’s developing external foundation for rebuilding Netherworld order and sheltering Yin souls from the present world’s incompatible laws. 143 215 263
Associated Treasures
- Book of Life and Death — Records names, lifespans, and karmic threads; a projection is absorbed by Zhou Yao. 196
- Sin Mirror — Reveals sins and supports Netherworld judgment; also used by the Ghost Assistant to alter ghost gods’ cognition and manipulate reincarnation. 205 209
- Bridge of Helplessness — Soul-delivery and sin-cleansing treasure retrieved by Zhou Yao. 213 215
- Meng Po Bowl — A Netherworld treasure reclaimed during the rebuilding of the soul-guidance process. 263
- Palace of Absolute Yin Edict — A Six-Heavens edict that projects the supreme authority of Mount Luofeng and the Netherworld’s order. 183
- Ghost-god origins — Relics such as the Wealth-at-First-Sight Hat, Mourning Staff, Impermanence Robe, and Soul-Snaring Rope, each tied to ghost-god authority. 152
Erasure Crisis
A crimson-gold eye from a higher-dimensional space erases the Ghost Assistant’s divine office and the First Hall when their aura leaks beyond the collapsing historical remnant. 212
Zhou Yao concludes that reviving the Netherworld or openly displaying deity-level Netherworld power may trigger this destructive mechanism. However, the Bridge of Helplessness remains untouched because it lies beyond the remnant, indicating that the erasure operates through specific conditions rather than indiscriminately. 212 213
The crisis also creates an opportunity: with the ancient gods absent and their authority vacant, Zhou Yao can occupy portions of the Netherworld Great Dao that would have been inaccessible under the original divine hierarchy. 140 207
Relationships
- Zhou Yao — Seeks to become the successor and rebuilder of the Netherworld through the Yin Son of Heaven fate, Six Heavens of Mount Luofeng, and Penetrating the Netherworld. 140 240 263
- Xie An — Invested as Yin Commander, becoming a renewed official link between yin and yang and a key agent in restarting Netherworld order. 205
- Ghost Assistant — Usurper associated with the First Hall; uses the Sin Mirror to distort cognition and manipulate reincarnation before his defeat and the subsequent erasure of his divine office. 205 212
- Everjoy Celestial Lord — Activates the Yin-Yang Realm Tokens, causing the Netherworld ruins to erupt and disrupting the Jade Capital City God’s plans. 165
- Sun Wukong — Wreaks havoc in the Mythic Echo’s Underworld, defeats Orthodox Gods, and disrupts the Life-and-Death Register. 267 268 270
- Underworld Orthodox Gods — In the Mythic Echo, acknowledge Zhou Yao as “Your Majesty,” enabling his advancement and placing them under his command. 270 271
