Background / History

During M15–M16, the Emperor entered a Warp portal on Molech and vanished. He returned to find humanity reduced to techno-barbarism, an outcome that left him furious and determined to destroy the existing order and rebuild humanity’s former glory. 396

Before becoming Emperor, he studied at Federal Truth University under Professor Ers and used the name Sheldon. He acknowledges that his education gave him broad knowledge, but not the ability to independently recreate all of humanity’s lost technology. 396 444 445

On shattered Terra, Malcador found the Emperor and convinced him to become humanity’s unquestionable leader. Together they united Terra, created the Imperium’s administrative institutions, allied with Mars, and began the Great Crusade. 397

The Emperor intended the Primarchs to help humanity reclaim the stars, after which he hoped to relinquish his crown and live again as a mortal. His plans instead collapsed into the Horus Heresy, the failure of the Webway project, and his confinement to the Golden Throne. 183 738 742

Dual Nature and the God-Emperor

The Emperor identifies the being on the Golden Throne as both himself and not himself. His humanity was gradually overwhelmed by divinity, producing the cold, faith-fed God-Emperor that battles Chaos in the Warp. 184 572

Lin Fan is uniquely able to hear the Emperor’s human voice without being overwhelmed by his divine presence. The Emperor entrusts him with guiding the Imperium without distorting his intent through religious persecution, and ultimately asks him to free him from the Throne. 184

After the Dark King was sealed and Oedmeir restored the Emperor’s body through the Ascension Throne, Sanguinius, Ferrus Manus, and Isha created a more benevolent God-Emperor manifestation. This new form emerged as a woman in golden armor and remained connected to the Golden Throne. 1042 1043 1065 1066

Appearance

The Emperor’s appearance is partly a psychic projection: different observers perceive him as the image they consider most perfect. His ordinary face can be seen by those insulated from psychic influence, such as the Sisters of Silence. 987 1043
