Nick Fury's facial muscles twitched violently. He opened his mouth, instinctively wanting to refute it, wanting to use his usual excuses like "information control" and "the bigger picture matters" to defend himself.
But when his gaze swept over Black Widow's complicated expression and Maria Hill's eyes, which held an indescribable meaning, he suddenly realized that all those arguments about "secrecy" would be pale and powerless before the truth. They would only further intensify the conflict.
So he could only force the words that had risen to his lips back down.
After pondering for more than ten seconds, Nick Fury finally tried to salvage the situation in an ambiguous tone. "I'm still not certain what specific connection exists between Pierce and the Winter Soldier, or whether Captain America's death was entirely orchestrated behind the scenes by Pierce—"
Before he could finish, Tony Stark rudely interrupted him. "Since that's the case, then let's be decisive and destroy S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra together—only then can we make sure no one slips through the net. It's the safest course of action."
Seeing Tony Stark refuse to back down and press him step by step, even going so far as to completely deny the foundation of the career he had spent half his life building, the last shred of Nick Fury's good temper—the part trying to maintain a superficial peace—vanished without a trace.
