First Appearance Chapter 1: The Proper Way to Praise the Emperor 1

Background / History

The Emperor first encounters Liu Zhipeng on twenty-second-century Earth while appearing as an immense humanoid silhouette within cold golden radiance. When he asks Liu what he looks like, the startled and intoxicated Liu calls him a “huge yellow rat.” The Emperor does not visibly react in anger; his gaze seems to examine Liu’s soul before Liu loses consciousness and begins his first reincarnation as a Nurgling. 1

In the original timeline, the Emperor confronts Horus during the Siege of Terra after recognizing Liu Zhipeng’s efforts to defend the planet. He acknowledges Liu’s choices and accepts the vox-caster Liu provides before departing for the Vengeful Spirit. 106 During the duel, he identifies Horus’s Chaos-given strength as borrowed and foundationless, breaks the Warmaster’s Power Klaw, and uses the Emperor’s Sword to purge the Chaos power within him. After Horus fatally wounds him through deception, the Emperor destroys both Horus’s body and soul. 107

Severely wounded, he is brought back to Terra by Rogal Dorn and connected to the Golden Throne. Though physically shattered, he resumes command long enough to issue the Purge Protocol against the surviving traitor forces. 108

Much later, when the Four Chaos Gods nearly destroy Liu Zhipeng, the Emperor’s will awakens and shields him with golden power. The resulting clash gives Liu the energy needed to complete his transformation into the Lord of Miracles and Destruction. 465 466 The Emperor then reveals that Liu began as a seed separated from his own essence: a distinct being meant to retain humanity, develop independently, and become hope through eleven lives of hardship and choice. 467

Knowing that a new timeline will erase the old one, the Emperor entrusts Liu with humanity’s future and sends him back to prevent the Horus Heresy. 468 In the revised history, he receives Liu’s USB drive in a café and later uses its technology to create stable Astartes rather than relying on the unstable Thunder Warriors. He reunifies Terra without the original timeline’s purge of his own warriors. 471 476

During the Great Crusade, the Emperor meets Jian Ya’s fleet and traces its advanced technology back to Liu. Upon meeting Liu’s holographic projection, he learns that Liu regards himself as humanity’s “divinity,” complementing the Emperor’s role as humanity’s “humanity.” The two agree to divide their responsibilities: the Emperor leads humanity’s development and expansion while Liu handles Chaos and xenos diplomacy. 549 550

Appearance

The Emperor’s appearance shifts according to circumstance, from an overwhelming golden war-god to an unremarkable human disguise. 1 466 470

  • An enormous, indistinct humanoid silhouette surrounded by majestic but cold golden radiance. 1
  • Golden eyes compared to supernovas during the battle with Horus. 108
  • Resplendent golden power armor when acting as the ruler of the Imperium. 548
  • In his fading true form, he appears as a broad-shouldered, black-haired and bearded man in a simple white robe. 466
  • While hidden on twenty-second-century Earth, he works as an ordinary café waiter in a dark vest. 470

Personality

The Emperor is decisive, calculating, and burdened by the survival of humanity. He is willing to make severe choices, including entrusting Liu with the destruction of an entire timeline to create a better future. 468 Even while accepting Liu’s aid and technology, he remains cautious, refusing to trust an unknown power merely because it offers humanity an advantage. 548 549

Despite his divine image, he deeply resents being treated as a god. He wants humanity to think and act independently, but admits that every attempt to deny his divinity only strengthened humanity’s worship of him. 467 His relationship with Liu reveals a more vulnerable side: regret over Liu’s suffering, pride in his growth, and relief at finally having someone able to share humanity’s burden. 466 467 549
