Background / History
Fall and first death
During the Siege of Terra, Horus is a Chaos-corrupted demigod empowered by all four Chaos Gods. He overwhelms Sanguinius, breaks the Angel's wings and armor, and prepares to execute him before events interrupt the killing blow 105.
Horus awaits the Emperor aboard the Vengeful Spirit, declaring himself Chaos incarnate. In their duel, the Emperor exposes the central weakness of Horus's power: it is borrowed from Chaos and lacks a foundation. He crushes Horus's Power Klaw and uses the Emperor's Sword to purge the Warp energy from his body 104 107.
Briefly regaining clarity, Horus begs his father for salvation, then exploits the Emperor's hesitation to wound him with a concealed daemonic hand. His killing of Ollanius Pius drives the Emperor into a final outburst of wrath, which destroys Horus's body and annihilates his soul 107 108.
Rebirth as H-02
Liu Zhipeng later awakens in an Astartes-like body inside Fabius Bile's laboratory on Harmony Star. A data-slate identifies the body as H-02, a discarded Horus clone deemed defective because it lacks psychic resonance. Liu accepts Horus's identity and resolves to use the new life to correct Horus's past failures 127.
Horus discovers and rescues a baby clone of Fulgrim from the same facility. He identifies Fulgrim as his brother rather than a specimen, fashions improvised clothing and a carrier for him, and prioritizes their escape from Fabius and the Eye of Terror 128 129.
After fighting through Bile's New Humans and Noise Marines, Horus kills Fabius, steals a Stormbird, and pilots himself and Fulgrim through the Eye of Terror. He rejects offers from Chaos powers, including Khorne and Nurgle, rather than resume the role of a Chaos champion 137 138 139.
Appearance
Across his incarnations, Horus is a towering, heavily muscled Primarch with a bald head, sharp golden eyes, and an imposing presence that unsettles even Space Marines. His appearance varies sharply between his fallen Chaos form and his later loyalist incarnation 105 129 179.
- Fallen form — Wears spiked black Terminator armor marked with the Eye of Horus; his body and voice are distorted by the combined power of the Four Gods 105 106.
- H-02 form — Initially emerges bare-chested in ragged cloth, armed only with an improvised alloy spear 129 130.
- Warmaster armor — Later dons black Terminator armor with brass trim, dramatically enhancing his combat capability and restoring the iconic image of the Warmaster 143.
- Loyalist insignia — During the Vigilus campaign, he wears black-and-gold armor bearing only the gold Luna Wolves emblem and displays no visible Chaos corruption 179 187.
Personality
The original Chaos-corrupted Horus is prideful, cruel, and consumed by resentment. He treats his borrowed divinity as proof that he has surpassed the Emperor, mocks Sanguinius in defeat, and weaponizes a plea for mercy to betray his father 105 107.
The H-02 incarnation retains Horus's authority, confidence, and tactical instincts but is shaped by Liu Zhipeng's memories. He is blunt, impatient, and frequently irreverent, yet consistently chooses protection and rehabilitation over Chaos corruption. His care for Fulgrim becomes the clearest expression of this change 129 132 163.
As a commander, Horus is decisive and willing to take calculated risks. He uses deception against superior forces, provokes enemies into disadvantageous engagements, and entrusts difficult responsibilities to subordinates he believes can grow into them 157 158 164.

Strategic Command

- Passes through the temporal effect while appearing frozen to Trazyn 144.
- Uses the opportunity to wait out transport to Solemnace before breaking free from his display case 144.
Primordial Flame

- Causes tens of thousands of cultists to renounce their leaders and seek redemption under Horus 182 183.
Glory of the Blood Brawl
[Glory of the Blood Brawl] converts pain, rage, and hostile power into combat momentum.
- Activates after Mortarion's venom attacks both Horus's body and soul 173.
- Multiplies his speed and strength, allowing him to overwhelm Mortarion with Worldshatterer and close-quarters strikes 173.
- Cannot completely remove Nurgle's physical plague laws; the lingering corruption continues eroding Horus's flesh after the battle 176.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Talon of Horus — Five-bladed power claw acquired with his Terminator armor from Trazyn's collection; later used to kill Abaddon 143 187.

- Complete STC data crystal — Recovered from Solemnace and given to Magos Malthus to advance Zelanis's technology 151 155 160.
Relationships
- The Emperor — Horus's father. The Emperor destroys the Chaos-corrupted original Horus, but later divine intervention compels Imperial forces to obey the returned Horus 107 148.
- Fulgrim — His younger brother and ward. Horus rescues Fulgrim as an infant, protects him throughout the Eye of Terror and Solemnace, and eventually appoints him regent of his domain 129 143 164.
- Fabius Bile — Creator of H-02 and primary antagonist of Horus's rebirth arc. Horus kills him while escaping Harmony Star 127 137.

- Valerian — Adeptus Custodes Shield-Captain compelled by the Emperor's command to serve Horus; later entrusted with Fulgrim's protection 148 157.
- Alkato — Imperial Fists captain and senior commander. Initially suspicious of Horus's rehabilitation policy, he later acknowledges that Horus's methods work 162 163.

- Abaddon — Former subordinate and rival claimant to the Warmaster's legacy. Horus kills him with the Talon of Horus after confronting him over his life of imitation 187.
- Belisarius Cawl — Receives Horus's final crystal chip containing his vision for a better Imperium 190.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Solemnace Escape
Horus allows Trazyn to place him and Fulgrim in temporal stasis as museum exhibits, then uses [Temporal Wraith] to remain active, break free, access Solemnace's network, and assemble an unlikely force of preserved Imperial warriors 142 144 145 148.
Liberation of Zelanis
After escaping Solemnace, Horus publicly returns on Zelanis Prime, gains the compliance of its defenders, defeats the Ork invasion, and establishes the world as the base of his growing loyalist force 154 156 160.
He also directs Magos Malthus to study and improve upon the recovered STC rather than merely preserve it, accelerating Zelanis's military and industrial development 160 162.
Penitent Legions and the Dawn Expedition
Horus supports the integration of traitor Legion gene-seed into the Penitent Legions, judging warriors by present loyalty rather than their genetic inheritance. His success convinces even Alkato that rehabilitation can strengthen the Imperium 162 163.
Before departing for Vigilus, Horus appoints Fulgrim as regent and gives him guidance on the balance between trust and vigilance 164.
Laiser IX and Mortarion's Defeat
On Laiser IX, Horus personally investigates a Death Guard distress signal and confronts Mortarion in an ancient monastery. Mortarion poisons him with Nurgle's rot, but Horus activates [Glory of the Blood Brawl], turns the battle, and eventually sends the Death Lord back to the Warp 171 173 177.
Vigilus and Final Death
Horus exposes a Genestealer Cult's false ascension, converts its surviving followers through [Primordial Flame], and eliminates its Patriarch and Bishop 182 183.
He then accepts Abaddon's challenge, kills him in a duel, and intends to offer the Black Legion a path to redemption. Before he can do so, Inquisitor Katavornus's assassination plot mortally wounds him. Horus entrusts Cawl with his vision, orders his veterans to return to Fulgrim, and dies while invoking the Emperor 186 187 188 190.
Great Crusade-Era Appearance
In a later account set during the Great Crusade, Horus appears as the Luna Wolves' vanguard commander and the “young Wolf God.” He urges the Emperor not to meet the Human Liberation Collective's hidden leader without an escort, but the Emperor chooses to go alone 547 549.
