Background / History

Marfa was raised by her mother in poverty. After her mother died, she sought out her biological father, who permitted her to stay in his household only as a servant girl. She endured exclusion and abuse there, learning to hide, read others' expressions, imitate social behavior, and avoid drawing dangerous attention. 591

A group of Wizards later tested the household's children for aptitude. Marfa displayed high-grade soul aptitude, received a bone identification plate, and was taken to Bone Spire School. Her family immediately treated her better, while her father provided her a small pouch of magic stones before her departure. 592

At the academy, Marfa's mentor treated her as a tool rather than a protégé. She survived harsh missions by piecing together incomplete knowledge, keeping portions of her gains, and privately accumulating resources. After becoming a Formal Wizard, she developed a reputation, recruited apprentices, and gained enemies over resources. 592

A trap set by those enemies stranded her in an abandoned ancient trial ground. By retracing worn runes, Marfa activated a deeper dormant trial and acquired ancient soul knowledge, spell structures, and a Soul Rule Vessel. These gains stabilized her soul core, improved her spiritual-power efficiency, and enabled her rapid rise. 592 593

After learning of another plot against her, Marfa acted first through connections and planted spies, resulting in a purge of her rivals. She later advanced to Stigma, participated in operations against rival factions and resource worlds, and eventually chose the security of a rear position after nearly dying against a veteran Stigma. She became a mentor and ultimately chief of the Soul Department. 593

Appearance

Marfa commonly presented herself in silver-white attire and a silver mask, cultivating an elegant but unsettling image. When unmasked, her pale face showed visible veins. 399 403

  • Silver-white hair, sometimes falling to her waist; small electrical arcs could dance at its tips. 375
  • Pale, bloodless skin; deep-purple eyes with vertical pupils. 375
  • Silver mask bearing a needle within a circle of intricate patterns, matching the emblem on her robe collar. 399
  • Usually wore a silver-white robe; at formal events, wore more elaborate silver-patterned attire. 416
  • Her soul retained an unusually complete humanoid form after her physical death, reflecting her deep cultivation in soul magic. 584

Personality

Marfa was cautious, secretive, and highly pragmatic. Her childhood taught her to survive through observation, restraint, selective imitation, and retreat; those habits later became political tools within the academy. 591

She preferred indirect action over personal risk. She used apprentices, spies, controlled souls, and disposable artifacts to distance herself from failed operations, and she avoided direct confrontation after her near-death experience in the exploration sequence. 593

Despite her careful facade, Marfa could be cruel and sadistic. She took visible pleasure in Lynn's apparent suffering after activating the hidden formation in her ring, and her confidence collapsed into hysteria once she realized he had deceived her. 583 584

Abilities & Skills

Soul Weaving and Soul Manipulation

Marfa specialized in soul-based Wizardry and led the academy's Soul Department.

  • Conducted research into soul symbiotes and Emotional Soulbinding, seeking to merge souls beyond ordinary contracts and blur the boundary between life and death. 166
  • Used a thread-thin silver-white soul needle to control Old Kori and extract information from him. 520
  • Maintained an exceptionally strong, well-defined soul after death. 584
  • Possessed a Soul Truth Mark, later extracted and absorbed by Lynn. 594

Soul Symbiote Research

Marfa selected Alphonse as a core subject because of his death affinity and connection to a ghostly companion.

  • Guided Alphonse in necromancy, undead revival, shadow stealth, and high-risk soul experiments. 166
  • Alphonse ultimately developed a one-body, two-souls symbiotic structure, with his primary soul fused to a parasitic Wraith. 416
  • The project risked affecting a subject's future cultivation due to the coexistence of two consciousnesses. 416

Wraith Command

Marfa controlled three Stigma-level Wraiths.

  • Two were mid-stage Stigma vengeful spirits; one was an early-stage Stigma Wraith. 584
  • The Wraiths had been refined from Wizard souls. 584
  • They had lost reason and spirituality, operating only according to Marfa's commands. 576
  • All three were captured within Lynn's Stigmata Domain and suppressed by Myriad Phenomena. 576 584

Marfa's expertise included soul weaving and fate manipulation, motivating Alphonse to choose her as his mentor. 24

Schemes and Concealment

  • Sent junior apprentices and a one-use Wizard artifact to support Morpheus's attempt on Lynn, ensuring the operation could be dismissed as personal apprentice actions if exposed. 593
  • Used her own faction's interrogation team to test whether Lynn knew of her involvement in the earlier ambush. 245
  • Disguised herself as a freckled young girl while investigating Lynn's dealings at Ghost Market. 519
  • Arranged a trap around a medium-sized world with Wutian, Eggs of Chaos members, Flame Demons, and Abyss Lords. 518 569

Story Role / Major Arcs

Mentor Selection and Soul Research

Alphonse chose Marfa during the academy's mentor selection ceremony because of her knowledge of soul weaving and fate manipulation. Under her, he became involved in soul-symbiote and Emotional Soulbinding experiments. 24 166

Attack on Lynn and Cover-Up

Marfa sent apprentices to support Morpheus's operation against Lynn. The attack failed, and the remains of her apprentices were discovered among the equipment left after the Skeletal Ground Dragon Valley battle. 171 593

After Morpheus's death, Marfa used an interrogation led by her faction to determine whether Lynn knew she had been involved. Lynn concealed that knowledge and resolved to wait until he was strong enough to confront her. 245

Failed Reconciliation and Poisoned Gift

After Lynn advanced to Stigma, Marfa attempted to smooth over their prior hostility, approaching him at his advancement banquet and later gifting him the Soul Purification Ring. Lynn analyzed the ring, discovered the soul-corroding substance inside, and replaced it with harmless Holy Light Blood Essence without exposing her. 403 416 421

Collusion with Eggs of Chaos

Learning that Lynn was buying worlds, Marfa judged him an increasing threat. She gathered intelligence through controlled agents, contacted Eggs of Chaos, and worked with Wutian to lure Lynn into a trap around a medium-sized world. 518 520 594

Her three Wraiths and allied forces participated in the siege, but Lynn's Stigmata Domain captured the Wraiths and much of the enemy force. 575 576

Capture and Death

When Wutian fled in the Eggs of Chaos shuttle, he ignored Marfa's pleas and left her to the three Dragon Gods. Aldric's formation patterns then fully subdued her. 581 582

Marfa activated the hidden formation in Lynn's ring, believing its Soul-Devouring Needle Crystal was crippling him. Lynn feigned agony, then killed her with a grayish-white arc after her overconfidence left her defenseless. 582 583

Her Void Crystal Plaque failed to extract her soul. Lynn captured her with the Myriad Souls Banner, stripped her memories and consciousness with the Memory Stripping Technique, and claimed her Soul Truth Mark, laboratory, inheritance, businesses, former subordinates, and former position. 584 594 602 608 613
