Nature and Composition
Chaos is the hostile power centered on the Warp, a realm of pure emotion and twisted will where its gods can reshape physical laws and act as embodiments of the realm’s rules. It feeds upon the emotions of living beings and attacks through daemonic invasion, corruption, psychic pressure, temptation, and manipulation 160 347.

| Slaanesh | Desire, sensual temptation, obsession, and corruptive blessing 241 347 | No longer counted among the remaining Chaos Gods by the final purge; Shalish is later identified as a former Slaanesh serving as an Imperium enforcer 369 372 |
Abilities and Characteristics
Warp Sovereignty
Within the Warp, the Chaos Gods possess near-limitless reach. Their will can reshape laws, manifest projections, empower servants, and sustain their domains through the Sea of Souls 160 215.
- Their home-ground advantage allows them to contest even conceptual authorities; Tzeentch temporarily erodes and rewrites Aha’s theater rules within the Warp 215.
- Chaos projections can invade realspace, lead daemonic hosts, and pressure mortal minds without their true bodies fully manifesting 20 112.
- Their power is vulnerable when the Warp’s laws are overwritten or cut off. Abyssal erosion causes their authority over local Chaos energy to become sluggish, resistant, and ineffective 225.
Corruption and Temptation
Chaos feeds on living beings’ fear, rage, desire, paranoia, and despair, then turns these emotions into influence and power 347.
- Tzeentch assaults minds with contradictory knowledge, false futures, and schemes designed to magnify fear and doubt 347.
- Nurgle spreads decay and offers corruption through distorted affection and endurance 112 347.
- Slaanesh corrupts through temptation, obsession, and reality-warping blissful energy 241 347.
- Khorne incites slaughter and battle-lust, though Abyssal madness eventually twists even this focused violence into indiscriminate destruction 238 250.
Daemonic Warfare
Chaos fields vast forces ranging from lesser daemons and cultists to Greater Daemons, Chaos Space Marines, daemon engines, and god-blessed champions 20 47 153.
- Invasion and boarding actions — Kairos Fateweaver deploys Tzeentch daemons and Red Corsairs directly into Macragge’s Honour through a Warp rift 20.
- Warp-enhanced fleets — Abaddon’s Black Legion, Chaos raiders, and Vashtorr’s war machines conduct large-scale naval offensives against Imperial territory 47 148 153.
- Reality and machine corruption — Vashtorr can override defensive systems, targeting arrays, and automated weapons by directly altering local physical and mechanical laws 153.
- Internal instability — Chaos forces frequently undermine one another. Khorne’s daemons attack Tzeentch’s forces during a shared assault, while ambitious figures such as Vashtorr prioritize personal objectives over allies 177 153.
Fatecraft and Schemes
Tzeentch serves as Chaos’s foremost planner, using fate threads, psychic manipulation, and bargains to create advantageous variables 163.
- Kairos Fateweaver attempts to trap Guilliman through curses, prophecy, and a ritual circle formed by Tzeentchian daemons 20.
- Tzeentch forms a pact with Darth Vader to exploit Luke Skywalker’s power and open an ultimate gate to the Abyss 163.
- It manipulates the Emperor’s Binding Legion by posing as a guiding will, leading the force deeper into a prepared trap 240.
- Its pursuit of Yog-Sothoth’s knowledge ultimately leaves it distracted and vulnerable during the Warp’s collapse 227 236.
Notable Agents and Forces
- Abaddon the Despoiler — Chaos Warmaster and Black Legion commander. He attempts to seal the Nachmund Gauntlet with Blackstone Crowns, later assaults The Rock alongside Vashtorr, and dies during that campaign 74 146 159.
- Kairos Fateweaver — Tzeentch’s Greater Daemon and adviser. He leads the ambush against Guilliman’s fleet before Prince of Wales, Glory, Joan of Arc, Obi-Wan, and Guilliman force him to flee through a Warp rift 20 23.
- Magnus the Red — Chaos-aligned Primarch who drags Guilliman’s fleet into a Warp Maelstrom and later acts on Tzeentch’s orders against the T’au fleet 19 161.
- Vashtorr — Daemonic Lord of Armaments who allies with Abaddon to seize a key fragment from The Rock. His pursuit of Abyssal power leaves him traumatized, mutated, and increasingly unstable 146 159 249.
- Fulgrim — Slaanesh-corrupted Primarch who turns Commorragh into a sacrificial altar and later receives Slaanesh’s final blessing, reaching a state near godhood 231 241.
- Typhus — Nurgle’s servant tasked with investigating and later containing Abyssal contamination linked to the Revelations of Gla’aki 236 249.
History
Early Imperial Conflicts
Chaos forces are already attacking Ultramar when Hua Wei arrives. Plague Marines, Black Legion fanatics, toxic artillery, and Warp storms nearly overwhelm the Sanctum while Guilliman’s Armor of Fate remains in stasis 2. Imperial forces subsequently cleanse the Plague Garden death world, fighting Nurgle’s corpse armies under Guilliman’s command 8.
Magnus later traps Guilliman’s expeditionary fleet in a Warp Maelstrom, where Red Corsairs conduct boarding assaults and constant psychic pressure steadily weakens the Lord Regent 19. Tzeentch escalates the attack through Kairos Fateweaver, whose forces board Macragge’s Honour and attempt to capture Obi-Wan Kenobi as a variable outside fate 20 21. Kairos is badly wounded by Prince of Wales’s main cannons, loses an arm to Guilliman’s Emperor’s Sword, and retreats, causing the remaining Chaos forces to rout 23 24.
Abaddon’s Campaigns
On Vigilus, Abaddon leads the Black Legion in destroying Blackstone deposits and installing Blackstone Crowns intended to collapse the Nachmund Gauntlet, trap Guilliman’s fleet, and make the region a daemon paradise 71 74. Pandora disrupts the plan, destroys the Crowns, defeats Abaddon’s Terminator guard, and severely wounds the Warmaster despite his blessings from all four gods 74.
Abaddon and Vashtorr later attack The Rock for a key fragment. The campaign collapses into a multi-sided battle involving loyalist Primarchs, Hilling forces, Chaos fleets, Be’lakor, and an invading Ork WAAAGH! 153 154. Abaddon’s death draws the direct attention of the four Chaos Gods, but an Emperor projection and a C’tan deter their intervention; Vashtorr is allowed to escape with the fragment under a negotiated arrangement 159.
Conflict with the Hilling Empire
The Chaos Gods become increasingly alarmed by the Hilling Empire’s god-level forces, particularly Pandora’s existence-erasure authority. They convene in the Warp to seek intelligence and recruit Darth Vader’s knowledge of the Abyss 208.
Tzeentch and Vader establish a pact: Chaos will help Vader acquire Luke’s power, while Vader will use his eventual ascension to open a gate for the Abyss 163. The alliance destabilizes Chaos from within, as Tzeentch’s interest in Abyssal knowledge and control of Vader creates risks even the other gods cannot fully measure 225 237.
Abyssal Erosion and Collapse
The opening of an Abyssal fissure changes the balance of the Warp. Chaos authority fails in the contaminated region, and the four gods find themselves unable to close the expanding rift or command the surrounding energy as before 225 227. Yog-Sothoth appears as the “Key of the Gate,” exposing the Chaos Gods to knowledge and emptiness beyond their comprehension 227.
Abyssal grimoires drive daemons into mutation and madness, while Vashtorr’s summoning of Ghroth unleashes further Old Ones and contaminants across the Warp 235 236. Khorne personally confronts Yog-Sothoth but is driven into madness, becoming a destructive vessel capable of opening the Great Rift further and allowing contaminants into realspace 238 250.
The Hilling Empire, Imperium, Super God Academy, and other allied forces eventually counterattack. Genesis annihilates Abyssal gods and pollutants in the Great Rift, while Doom Slayer continues his personal battle against Khorne 285. After Khorne’s defeat, the Emperor offers him survival and future battle in exchange for submission; Khorne accepts 287.
Final Purge
Tzeentch is captured after its schemes fail against Hua Wei’s overwhelming authority, leaving it unable to escape, manipulate change, or meaningfully resist 288. The Hilling Empire later seals the Warp after driving back the corrupted Abyssal gods, devastating the remaining daemon population and shattering Tzeentch’s godhood 314.
Neos ultimately enters the purified Warp and eliminates Tzeentch and Nurgle, identified as the final remaining Chaos Gods. Their destruction ends Chaos’s rule over the Warp and closes the era in which its gods could dominate the galaxy through corruption and fear 369.
Relationships
- Hilling Empire — Primary adversary. Its Arbitration Mechanism, Judgment Mechanism, fleets, and god-level units repeatedly suppress Chaos forces, dismantle its Warp dominance, and ultimately force its collapse 208 285 288.
- Imperium of Man — Longstanding enemy and principal target of invasions, corruption, and manipulation. Chaos attacks Ultramar, Terra, Vigilus, The Rock, and the Webway throughout the conflict 2 71 148 260.
- The Abyss / Outer Gods — Initially treated by Tzeentch as a source of opportunity, but becomes an existential threat that overwrites Chaos authority, mutates daemon forces, and drives Khorne mad 163 225 238.
- Darth Vader — Tzeentch’s temporary partner and intended instrument for opening the gate to the Abyss; Vader’s involvement accelerates Chaos’s exposure to Abyssal power 163 225.
- Doom Slayer — Khorne’s personal rival. Khorne attempts to claim him, but Doom rejects the Blood God’s favor and later defeats him in direct combat 103 287.
