Background / History

The Emperor unified humanity, established the Imperium, created the Primarchs, and fought to protect humanity from the Warp. His long campaign of rule was defined by sacrifice, war, and increasingly ruthless decisions made for humanity's survival. 283 347

For ten thousand years, he remained bound to the Golden Throne beneath the Imperial Palace. The throne sustained his failing body, powered the Astronomican, and allowed him to hold shut a daemon-infested Webway entrance beneath Terra. The device drew upon souls rather than conventional energy, leaving him in perpetual agony while his human emotions were gradually eroded by divinity. 35 98 145

Though fragmented, his will continued to direct the Imperium. He granted Guilliman supreme authority to reorganize the Imperium into a fully militarized war machine, judging extreme measures necessary for human survival. 35

The Emperor's consciousness more fully awakened during Luke Skywalker's attempt to restore Sanguinius. Believing the Hilling Empire might share ties to ancient Terra, he ordered Guilliman to trust and support it, entrusted Horus's soul fragment to Luke, and offered the Empire the Imperium's protection. 87

He later communicated directly with the Hilling Queens during their examination of the Golden Throne.
