Background / History

Origin and early influence

The Heavenly Dao arose from the Primordial World's Clear Qi, while the Earthly Dao wielded Turbid Qi. It became the dominant intermediary through which cultivators sought Heaven-Earth Merit, concealing the existence and significance of the Earthly Dao and Human Dao for much of the world's history 68 89.

It selected Hongjun as its spokesperson for Dao Integration, allowing its power to manifest through him. The Primordial Spirits of the Heavenly Dao Saints were entrusted to it, leaving those Saints dependent on its authority despite their status 41 87.

Growing autonomy

After the Earthly Dao emerged, the Heavenly Dao began reclaiming authority from Hongjun and the Six Saints. Its growing self-protective instinct became clear when it recognized that it was incomplete and began restricting Hongjun's ability to direct the Saints 87 88.

As its power declined following the loss of the Heavenly Court, Heavenly Stars, and Primordial Wilderness, it offered Hongjun the Heavenly Book: Investiture of the Gods. Its intended solution was to restore order by investing Orthodox Gods and extending a network of law across the Heaven–Earth–Human Three Daos 89.

Taiqing's Dao Integration

When the Heavenly Dao's power revived, it elevated Taiqing into the Heavenly Dao Lord and granted him immense authority to resist Luohou. Taiqing could wield the Dao's three thousand Laws, but his unstable aura and compulsive hostility showed that he was functioning primarily as its puppet 104 106.

During the struggle against Luohou, the Heavenly Dao empowered Taiqing with manifestations including the Four Seasons Sword and Order Sword. Its authority was still insufficient to overcome the Six Paths of Reincarnation and Luohou's Earthly Dao power 106 107.

Suppression and escape

Hongjun later returned after faking his death and confronted the Heavenly Dao through Taiqing. Using the World-Destroying Mill, he suppressed it, ignored its offer to help capture the three thousand Gods and Devils, and refined it into the scepter called Heavenly Dao Authority 140 141.

Its will survived by using Taiqing's One Qi Transforms into Three Pure Ones to divide into three incarnations. These incarnations entered the sources of earth, fire, and water, while its main body remained connected to the Wind Origin 144.

When Hongjun threatened it again, the will removed the seals restraining earth, fire, water, and wind. The resulting eruption devastated the Primordial World, killed or injured nearly eighty percent of living beings, expended the Heavenly Dao's accumulated merit, and severely wounded Hongjun 145.

Abilities & Authority

Heavenly Law and Order

The Heavenly Dao embodies the Primordial World's rules, order, seasonal cycles, and tribulations.

  • Commands three thousand Laws through an authorized Dao Lord 106.
  • Governs the Four Seasons Transformation, heavenly order, and boundless Heavenly Tribulations 106.
  • Can manifest the Four Seasons Sword and Order Sword through Taiqing 106.
  • Its Order Sword can readily suppress Sages and cultivators below the Great Dao Realm, though Luohou resisted it through the Six Paths 106.

Saint Empowerment and Control

The Heavenly Dao's Saints derive much of their strength from its authority rather than their own cultivation.

  • Grants authority that allows Saints to borrow numerous Powers of Law; the Western Two Saints could wield more than ten with permission 68.
  • Can withdraw authority, reducing its Saints to their ordinary Sage-level strength 68.
  • Holds the entrusted Primordial Spirits of its Saints and can determine their survival or destruction 87.
  • Normally cannot empower its Saints inside Pangu Hall, where their connection to it is severed or greatly restricted 83 90.

Merit and Investiture

The Heavenly Dao acts as the channel through which cultivators obtain merit from the Primordial World's heaven and earth.

  • Responded to Di Jun and Tai Yi's Heavenly Dao oaths by bestowing merit that rapidly increased their cultivation 1.
  • Proposed the Investiture of the Gods to restore social and cosmic order after the Primordial Wilderness descended into chaos 89.
  • Intended to establish Orthodox Gods and a comprehensive heavenly system of rules, propriety, and authority 89.

Will Division and the Four Great Sources

The Heavenly Dao Will demonstrated an ability to persist beyond suppression by dividing and embedding itself in foundational world-forces.

  • Used One Qi Transforms into Three Pure Ones through Taiqing to split its weakened will into three 144.
  • Entered the sources of earth, fire, and water while retaining its principal connection to Wind 144.
  • Had previously exploited the Dragon-Han Calamity's aftermath to act as a stopper over the four great sources 145.
  • Removed those stoppers under pressure from Hongjun, unleashing earth, fire, water, and wind across the Primordial World 145.

Relationships

  • Hongjun — Chosen spokesperson and Dao-Integration vessel; their alliance was mutually exploitative. The Heavenly Dao sought to use Hongjun to take form, while Hongjun sought to use it to attain the Dao 41 141.
  • Taiqing — Heavenly Dao Lord and principal puppet. The Heavenly Dao granted him vast authority, then continued to exert its will through him even after Hongjun's return 104 106 140.
  • Six Heavenly Dao Saints — Their Primordial Spirits are entrusted to the Heavenly Dao, making their power and lives dependent on its authority 68 87.
  • Earthly Dao — Rival Great Dao whose emergence exposed the Heavenly Dao's monopoly over merit and information, beginning the open struggle between the Three Daos 68 106.
  • Human Dao — Rival Great Dao that emerged under Tongtian, disrupting the Heavenly Dao and Earthly Dao's contest for control of the Primordial World 103 123.
  • Luohou — Lord of the Earthly Dao and a direct enemy; he sought to suppress the Heavenly Dao before subjugating the Human Dao and uniting the Three Daos 106 108.
  • Dijiang — A major threat whose Law-Tribulation Power and later Great Dao development could potentially endanger the Heavenly Dao's position 65 142.
