Background / History

Hongjun rose from an earthworm into a Heavenly Dao Saint through the Jade Disc of Creation. After becoming a Sage, he and the Heavenly Dao arranged Purple Cloud Palace's preaching of the Dao to target the Three Pure Ones, intending to bind them beneath Heavenly Dao control and eventually obtain Pangu's Primordial Spirit source 96 131.

Having merged with the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun decreed that the Demon Race should rule the heavens while the Witch Clan managed the earth. He viewed the Witch Clan—Pangu's bloodline—and the Three Pure Ones as obstacles to his plan to absorb the Daos of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity 1 62 64.

The Earthly Dao's emergence and Luohou's return exposed Hongjun's ambitions. To contain Luohou, Hongjun summoned the Six Saints without regard for their objections and used them as nodes in the Seven Extremes Heaven-Sealing Formation 62 64.

As the Demon-Witch Calamity worsened, Hongjun prematurely launched the Investiture of the Gods. He ordered the saints to sacrifice their disciples and exploit the Human Race's fortune, provoking resentment from Taiqing, Yuanshi, Tongtian, and the others 92 93.

Hongjun personally infiltrated Pangu Hall to eradicate the Witch Clan, but Dijiang and the Eleven Witch Sages repelled him. After a prolonged battle, Dijiang seemingly killed Hongjun with Immeasurable Tribulation Qi 95 98.

His death was later revealed as a calculated deception. Through the Three Corpses Severing method, Hongjun possessed multiple genuine Outer Dao Dharma bodies; the Hongjun integrated with Heavenly Dao, the Hongjun slain in Pangu Hall, and the surviving Hongjun were all real manifestations of himself 130 131.

Disguised as a centipede, he orchestrated the collision of Heaven, Earth, and Human Dao, causing them to fuse into the Heaven-Splitting Great Dao. He manipulated Yuanshi, sacrificed Guangchengzi, and used Yuanshi as a further sacrifice to open the path toward Immortal Dao 130 131.

After obtaining the World-Destroying Mill on Grand Void Mountain, Hongjun turned on the Heavenly Dao itself. He imprisoned it within the mill, refined it into the Heavenly Dao Authority, and continued pursuing control over the Daos of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity 140 141 143.

Appearance

Hongjun commonly appears as a refined elderly Daoist in flowing robes. His original form is an earthworm or centipede, an origin he intensely resents being mentioned 94 130.

• His Infinite Violet-Gold Divine Light Drill takes the form of an unusual earthworm capable of boring through the Nine Heavens and Nine Hells 94 95.
• In battle, the Jade Disc of Creation can become butterfly-like garments or wings around his body 97.
• While cultivating atop the World-Destroying Mill, he is described with a bare chest, wildly flying hair and beard, and the bearing of a vicious outlaw rather than a Dao Ancestor 144.

Personality

Hongjun is patient, calculating, and intensely ambitious. He is willing to spend countless ages concealing his strength, manipulating allies and enemies alike, and arranging layered contingencies to secure his path toward Immortal Dao 130 131.

He treats disciples and subordinates as tools. He forces the Six Saints into service, pressures them to sacrifice their followers, revives Nuwa primarily to obtain information, and sacrifices both Guangchengzi and Yuanshi without remorse 62 75 92 93 130.

His self-preservation is exceptional. Hongjun's defining strength is his ability to “bend”: he uses multiple bodies, feigned defeats, and false deaths to survive unfavorable situations and escape the Heavenly Dao's control 131 140.
