Background / History
Hong Yun traveled through Chaos toward Zixiao Palace with Zhen Yuanzi, but separated from him after recklessly testing his newly comprehended Red Cloud Formation against Chaos Divine Thunder. Di Jiang saved him from a fatal strike, after which Hong Yun frankly admitted his carelessness. 5
At Zixiao Palace, Hong Yun sympathized with Jie Yin and Zhun Ti's pleas for seats and yielded his Meditation Cushion to Zhun Ti despite Zhen Yuanzi's attempts to stop him. 7 Zhen Yuanzi later warned that this act had placed Di Jiang in an awkward position and urged Hong Yun to apologize. 11
Jie Yin and Zhun Ti viewed the surrendered seat as a karmic debt too great to repay and ambushed Hong Yun while he returned toward Firecloud Cave. His Red Cloud Formation was destroyed, and he was badly injured before Di Jiang intervened for a second time; Zhen Yuanzi arrived afterward and helped drive the attackers away. 11 12
At Five Villages Temple, Di Jiang explained that Jie Yin and Zhun Ti sought to erase their debt by killing its creditor. Hong Yun became enraged at their betrayal, apologized to Di Jiang for the Meditation Cushion incident, and remained under Zhen Yuanzi's protection. 13 He later joined Di Jiang and Zhen Yuanzi in discussing the Dao and supported Di Jiang's request to examine the Earth Book. 14
Hong Yun continued attending the Zixiao Palace lectures. He openly despised Jie Yin and Zhun Ti after recognizing them as his attackers, though Zhen Yuanzi restrained him from confronting them within Hongjun's sacred ground. 21 At the final lecture, Hongjun's remaining strand of Hongmeng Violet Qi chose Hong Yun. 27
When the Primordial Gourds emerged on Mount Kunlun, Zhen Yuanzi aided Hong Yun in obtaining the red gourd. Hong Yun refined it into the Ninefold Soul-Scattering Gourd before leaving the area with Zhen Yuanzi following the Ancestral Witches' confrontation with the other cultivators. 31 32
Appearance
Hong Yun's physical appearance is not described in the provided material. He is closely associated with crimson clouds and auspicious cloud phenomena.
- Travels upon a ten-thousand-foot crimson cloud. 11
- His Dao-discussion manifestation includes seven-colored clouds, phantoms of living beings, and red clouds extending for hundreds of millions of miles. 14
- Possesses a warm, accepting aura during Dao discussion. 14
Personality
Hong Yun is compassionate to the point of being overly accommodating. He immediately sympathizes with Jie Yin and Zhun Ti's apparent hardship and gives up his own Meditation Cushion, even though Zhen Yuanzi recognizes the danger of doing so. 6 7 His tendency to help others also leaves him vulnerable: he experiments with an incomplete formation in Chaos and later fails to anticipate the karmic consequences of his generosity. 5 11
He is straightforward about his mistakes and deeply grateful to those who help him. After Di Jiang saves him twice, Hong Yun acknowledges the debt openly and apologizes for having unintentionally put Di Jiang in a difficult position. 12 13 His kindness does not prevent anger; once Di Jiang exposes Jie Yin and Zhun Ti's motive, Hong Yun is furious at their attempt to murder him over the seat he freely surrendered. 13 21
