Background
Yuanshi was teaching the Twelve Golden Immortals on Kunlun Mountain when he sensed the Purple Firmament Divine Thunder gathering over the Eastern Sea. He attempted to calculate its cause, but the Heavenly Secrets remained inaccessible even to him. 3
As one of the Three Pure Ones, Yuanshi shares a common origin with Taiqing and Tongtian. However, disagreements between the Expounding Sect and the Interception Sect led to repeated disputes with Tongtian; Tongtian ultimately departed Kunlun Mountain and established a new Dao field in the Eastern Sea. 37
Yuanshi places strong importance on lineage, propriety, and innate endowment. He selected the Expounding Sect's Twelve Golden Immortals carefully, yet repeatedly compares them unfavorably to Zhao Gongming's exceptional talent and accomplishments. 105 178
Personality
Yuanshi is proud, status-conscious, and deeply protective of Saintly dignity. He frequently invokes the principle that “beneath Saints, all are ants,” and reacts harshly when juniors fail to show him deference. 132 162
He looks down on the Interception Sect's diverse disciples, dismissing them as “furred and horned, wet-born and egg-hatched.” His contempt for Tongtian's disciples repeatedly escalates political disputes into direct conflict. 133 163
Despite his pride, Yuanshi can act pragmatically when his disciples' interests are at stake. He later petitions Zhao Gongming to spare the Expounding Sect's Golden Immortals from the Investiture List and agrees to let Zhao use the Pangu Banner when necessary for their tribulation. 178 179
Abilities & Skills
Heavenly Dao Sage Authority
As a Heavenly Dao Sage, Yuanshi can draw upon the Primordial World's power to strengthen himself, suppress opponents, and interfere with surrounding laws and spiritual energy. 132 143
- His Heavenly Dao Authority can restrain a cultivator's recovery and suppress their access to Great Dao laws. 143 165
- His Primordial Spirit is anchored to the Heavenly Dao, allowing him to revive after death. 125 147
- Each revival consumes significant origin and risks eventual assimilation into the Heavenly Dao if repeated too often. 125
- Even with Heavenly Dao replenishment, repeatedly driving the Pangu Banner to its limit taxes his mana. 143
Jade Void Primordial Heavenly King Formation
Yuanshi's ultimate formation uses the Pangu Banner as its core and Jade Purity Origin together with Heavenly Dao Authority as its foundation. 143
- Manifests the Jade Void Primordial Heavenly King, a colossal Dharma Form capable of wielding the Pangu Banner as the blade of the Heaven-Opening Divine Axe. 143
- Its power reaches the level of a Primordial Unity Boundless Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal—comparable to the Fifth Heaven of Primordial Unity. 143 145
- Zhao Gongming shattered the formation with a Ten-Thousandfold Dao-Storing Strike, and later sent its manifested true body flying with a single slash. 144 163
Sect Leadership and Strategic Planning
Yuanshi directs the Expounding Sect's disciples and actively manipulates the Investiture of the Gods Cataclysm to preserve their prospects. 3 185
- He sought the teacher fates of the Earthly and Human Sovereigns, whose positions carried immense Merit and Fortune. 129
- He arranged for the Jade Void Golden Immortals to be placed on the Investiture List in the flesh, which would preserve their cultivation and grant Divine Dao Fortune. 185
- To free those limited places, he secretly dispatched his Three Corpses to kill Interception Sect disciples and send their Primordial Spirits to the list. 185
Equipment
- Pangu Banner — Yuanshi's Dao-Proving Heaven-Opening Supreme Treasure. It produces Heaven-Opening Sword Qi and serves as the core of the Jade Void Primordial Heavenly King Formation. 61 143
- Three Treasures Jade Ruyi — A spiritual treasure used to strike and suppress opponents, including Zhao Gongming. 132 142
- Nine-Dragon Agarwood Chariot — Yuanshi's signature mount; he later surrendered it to Zhao Gongming. 148
Relationships
- Pangu — Yuanshi is one of the Three Pure Ones formed from Pangu's Primordial Spirit; Mount Buzhou, formed from Pangu's spine, initially made him unwilling to destroy it. 124
- Taiqing / Grand Pure One Laozi — Elder brother among the Three Pure Ones. Taiqing repeatedly mediates Yuanshi's disputes with Tongtian and Zhao Gongming, but later joins Yuanshi against Zhao. 37 133 165
- Tongtian Cult Leader — Younger brother and ideological rival. Their sects' opposing doctrines caused their split, while Yuanshi's actions against Interception Sect disciples repeatedly provoke Tongtian's retaliation. 37 133 185
- Zhao Gongming — Nephew by sect seniority and principal adversary. Yuanshi repeatedly attempts to suppress him, is defeated and slain by him, then later seeks his assistance in protecting the Expounding Sect's disciples. 133 146 178
- Guangchengzi — Yuanshi's disciple and a leading Jade Void Golden Immortal. Yuanshi intervenes to save him from the Three Skies, while Guangchengzi is later killed by Zhao Gongming and sent to the Investiture List. 162 166
- The Three Skies — Tongtian's disciples and Zhao Gongming's sisters. Yuanshi attempts to punish them for attacking Guangchengzi and nearly kills Qiong Xiao before Zhao Gongming intervenes. 162 163
- Heavenly Dao — Offered Yuanshi Saint Fruit Positions in exchange for destroying Mount Buzhou, tempting him into acting against his initial loyalty to Pangu. 124 125
Story Role / Major Arcs
Expounding–Interception Sect Rivalry
When the Interception Sect's Fortune stabilizes after Zhao Gongming's rise, Yuanshi leads the Twelve Golden Immortals to Golden Turtle Island to investigate. His confrontation with Tongtian develops into a proposed Dao debate among the Profound Sect's factions. 36 37
Mount Buzhou Incident
During the Witch–Demon conflict, Yuanshi proposes that both races retire into seclusion. Zhao Gongming counters him by exposing the Three Pure Ones' own division, leaving Yuanshi unable to press his argument. 123
The Heavenly Dao then offers Yuanshi control over Saint Fruit Positions if he destroys Mount Buzhou. Though he initially refuses out of loyalty to Pangu and fear of karmic backlash, he accepts the offer and rams the Heavenly Pillar. 124
The four Heavenly Pillars and Pangu's Will stabilize Mount Buzhou. Yuanshi's second attempt fails completely, causing his Saint body to explode and forcing his resurrection through the Heavenly Dao. 125
Conflict over the Human Sovereigns
Yuanshi claims the teacher fates of the Earthly and Human Sovereigns after the Human Race becomes Heaven and Earth's protagonist. Zhao Gongming instead proclaims himself teacher of all Human Sovereigns and receives the corresponding Heavenly Dao Merit. 129
Yuanshi later confronts Zhao Gongming over Fuxi and the Human Race. He attacks with the Three Treasures Jade Ruyi, but Zhao counters with a Golden Brick and a punch that sends the Saint flying. 132 133
First Battle with Zhao Gongming
During the Investiture of the Gods Cataclysm, Yuanshi personally attacks Zhao Gongming after confronting Interception Sect disciples. The Three Treasures Jade Ruyi and Pangu Banner fail to breach Zhao's Thirty-Six Heavens Worlds and Chaos Green Lotus Cauldron defenses. 142 143
Driven by humiliation and envy, Yuanshi manifests the Jade Void Primordial Heavenly King Formation. Zhao Gongming answers with Pangu True Form, Creation-Heaven Strike, and the Ten-Thousandfold Dao-Storing Strike, severely injuring Yuanshi and ultimately slaying him. 144 146
Golden Turtle Island Confrontation
Yuanshi later intervenes when the Three Skies battle Guangchengzi. He immobilizes the Golden Flood Dragon Scissors, breaks through the Nine-Curved Yellow River Formation, and prepares to kill Qiong Xiao with a jade hammer. 162
Zhao Gongming returns to protect his sisters and challenges Yuanshi again. Yuanshi deploys the Jade Void Primordial Heavenly King Formation, but Zhao defeats its true body and later punches Yuanshi in the face despite Yuanshi and Taiqing's joint pressure. 163 165
Investiture List Schemes
After Zhao Gongming attains the Human Dao Ancestor Fruit Position, Yuanshi is forced to place five of his own personal disciples on the Investiture List. He then schemes to preserve the remaining Jade Void Golden Immortals by having Interception Sect disciples listed through their Primordial Spirits instead. 185
Tongtian discovers Yuanshi's use of the Three Corpses to kill Interception Sect disciples and establishes the Execution Immortal Sword Formation to force a final settlement. The formation later seals Kunlun Mountain, trapping Yuanshi and the Jade Void Golden Immortals. 185 186
