Background / History

Anko was Orochimaru's disciple before his defection from Konohagakure. He implanted her with a first-generation Cursed Seal derived from his Soul Splitting research; unlike later Cursed Seals, hers has no Stage One or Stage Two transformation and instead causes pain while allowing Orochimaru to sense her location through soul resonance. 40

At age twelve, Anko participated in Orochimaru's Demon Island research in the Land of Sea, including human-to-mermaid transformation experiments. Before defecting, Orochimaru erased her memories and abandoned her at the original base, although the research itself continued elsewhere. 136

Konohagakure later sent Anko ahead to the Land of Sea to investigate sea monsters and await contact from Lin Chongshu. After waiting for more than half a year without instructions, she stopped actively pursuing the mission and lived off its funds on the island. 136 164

Personality

Anko is laid-back, appetite-driven, and conspicuously unconcerned with formal discipline. While stationed on Summoning Island, she let her assignment lapse, spent mission funds on food, and repeatedly prioritized eating and sleeping over surveillance. 164 167 168

She is also highly adaptable. When Lin Chongshu scolds or threatens her, she quickly changes tactics, apologizes, bargains, or submits temporarily rather than persisting in a losing confrontation. 164 167 173 Despite this pragmatism, she has moments of decisive compassion: during the synthetic-beast outbreak, she was the first person in the facility to rescue a trapped researcher while other infiltrators stayed hidden. 169

Anko is distrustful and opportunistic in her dealings with Lin Chongshu. Land of Sea Investigation

Anko is assigned to reach the Land of Sea ahead of Lin Chongshu and receive the location of Orochimaru's new base. 136 By the time Lin finds her, she has waited for over half a year and largely abandoned the mission in favor of food and leisure. 164

She accompanies Lin in investigating a synthetic summoning-beast institute. She pays a 100,000-ryō deposit from her own money for Lin's requested beast, monitors the facility from an inn, and reports increasingly frequent monster roars. 165 168 When the institute collapses into chaos, she rescues a researcher with Hidden Shadow Snake Hands. 169

Capture and Confinement

After the institute incident, Anko discovers that Lin is the wanted criminal Lin Chongshu. She tries to negotiate and flee, but he captures her, has additional seals placed on her, and keeps her restrained for over half a year. 173 174 186

During captivity, Anko maintains a transactional arrangement with Lin: food, reading material, news, and better positioning in exchange for temporary compliance. She continues resisting when possible and rarely produces the negative emotions Lin's system seeks. 186

Framed for the Daimyo Murders

Lin offers Anko release if she kills several people as proof of loyalty. She accepts and kills guards and heirs of the Land of Water daimyo, while Lin deliberately lets witnesses escape so that the crime can be blamed on her and Konohagakure. 200 201

After telling her she is free, Lin throws her into the sea and arranges an S-rank bounty accusing her of massacring the daimyo's family. 202 204 Anko nevertheless returns to Kirigakure to confront him and insists that she will remain near him. 204 205

Return to Anbu and the Chunin Exams

Hiruzen Sarutobi transfers Anko to Anbu alongside Gekko Hayate and Uzuki Yugao, assigning them to oversee the second stage of the Chunin Exams. Lin interprets the transfer as Hiruzen's attempt to retain Anko as leverage over him. 212

Because of the bounty on her, Anko cannot publicly serve as the Forest of Death examiner. She instead supervises from the tower in Anbu uniform. 219 222 When evidence suggests Orochimaru has infiltrated the exams, she joins Gekko and Muta Aburame in investigating. 222
